You guys in Wisconsin want help with your muskie fishery? I have a proposal for you. I love your state, and I love to fish it. What if I try to start up a fund (with some assistance) to support catch and release, and advertise it on billboards on main drags (I-90/94, 53, 51) thru-out Wisconsin!!!!!???/?????
I, for one, could not sleep on our journey up to Minnesota when I was a kid. I was way too excited!! I noticed everything along the road. No reason kids can't notice Catch and Release billboards. They're our future, ladies and gentlemen. My son will respect nature and catch and release.
This is in response to ToddM's interesting article post, which really bothered me?

Jim,
Awesome idea!I would imagine that prime "real estate" would be pretty expensive, but worth the effort. Anybody out there know the costs involved? Anxious to see the responses. Steve

Billboards in Wisconsin, as a non-for-profit expense, will cost around $1000 a month, maximum.
You get 100 people to contribute $100, the state can be covered.
Let's make a statement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a guy that can put up signs on barns.......for free!!!!!!!!!!
Contact any local muskie clubs, Muskies Inc., PMTT, tackle store, bait shop, gas station that sell a fishing license, any fishing club or organization, etc...... Get a donation and gain support for not only your state, but from us FIB's coming up and spending money to support your gov't fishery officials.
Anybody ever see "See Ruby Falls" or "The House on the Rock"?
Money talks, poop walks!

Sounds like a plan to me. I think getting MI and other clubs involved is the way to go.

There are a ton of signs for whitetails in N.Wisconsin Promoting Selective buck harvest. Basically says Let them go and Let them grow. So I think its a good idea, even if only affects a small amount of youth, it will be a great start to expand their minds.

I can see it now in 10 years. every 5 miles another sign with the fish getting bigger. lol

The only problem I see with your plan is that alot of the catch and keep is being done by the locals. I fish Pelican lake in Oneida county an awful lot, and it would be a rare occurence to see one of the locals on that lake put back a fish. In fact last fall I had two old timers take a picture of a low forty inch fish for me and they were abosolutely shocked when I released it.

I agree that education is the key but we have to make sure we are targeting the right people.

Hey CJ,

Just a supplemental idea that might have a positive effect as far as making sure near everyone sees the piece.

I see 'Release the fighter' smallmoth bass release posters at the landings here on the bulletin boards that show the walleye, bass, and muskie size and numbers limits. These are printed on plastic sheets, and ask that trophy smallmouth be released to fight another day. I think the signs have been pretty successful, and most everyone sees them at the point of launching the boat. I bet for less than $1.5K enough could be printed and distributed to the landings to cover most of the state! I'd be happy to cover the launches around here.

You also might be able to get someone like Heckel's Eagle River marina to co-sponsor the boards, will spread the $$ out some more.
