Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Can't figure this one out...running a Garmin 178c on my console...came loaded when I bought the boat new in 2005. Never had an issue but this season when I run in plane it loses the bottom. Will show occasional marks for the bottom when I turn the gain to 100 percent but that's not right either. Played with the bottom lock HZ settings and even tried playing with the trim thinking maybe I was creating interference when trimmed up a bit but no dice. The transducer---I think that's what I see waaaaay back there when I shine a flashlight toward the back in the pump access area does not seem reachable....can't reach it with my hand reaching back laying on floor of boat...not sure what to try next.....maybe install a new ducer?

| Missed the part where it was a through hull transducer, so my money is on your transducer went bad. I have never used a through hull transducer before though.

Sounds like it's a through-hull transducer, right?
And you've had this boat/graph/transducer setup for years without issues?
Just clarifying some points. If your answers are both 'yes', then maybe the transducer is getting loose from the hull, like the glue is cracking or something. I don't know. |

That's what I'd look at. Thru hull is epoxied, and it could be the transducer has loosened? Any air gap would degrade performance. You could let some water into the bilge to cover it on plane, and see if it improves? |

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | ok narrowing it down....has to be how the water is passing under the boat because if when driving on plane I make a hard turn either left or right I regain contact and get a strong bottom read...that must change the water flow so it gets a solid read....so.....crawled under and noted there were a good many scratches under that part of the boat and in front of it, so I took rubbing compound and a buffer to it then applies some wax to fill in. Also the rear edge just behind where the ducer is had some of the gelcoat chipped off down to the glass so I worked up some jb weld and smoothed that out as well. I'm thinking these scratches and or chips were disrupting the water flow.....Going out Wednesday will update.

| I bet that is it. I know on an aluminum boat even 1 rivet in the way can cause an issue. |

I was whooping and hollering and my wife thought I was nuts.....I still think it is interference from some dings on the bottom of my hull, just turning up the Noise Reject took care of it. I'm betting there are other guys struggling with this and hope they can benefit from my experience. I've done LOTS of reading online and haven't come across this as a solution.... |

| Just messing with ya. Good work.
When my graph wasn't marking bottom very well at high speeds, i adjusted the pitch of the transducer and that fixed it. |
