I don't think you will be allowed in to Canada if you are a US citizen and have a felony on record; depending on the offense. Call the border and check on what, if anything, you need to do.

You have a descent chance at getting into Canada, you also have a descent chance at getting sent back home...Depends on a lot of factors, such as how thoroughly they check you, the person who checks you that day, and the type of offense you committed

I make 2 trips both ways each year. This year they ran our licenses going into Canada and also coming back to the US. Also, last year we were stopped and had to check into the office because we had a 14 year old with us. While there I saw 2 guys sitting in there that were being turned back and were "waiting for rides". One was very upset and said he had been going through every year for 37 years with no problems and this time he didnt make it. The other was a 22 year old who was left there by his buddies because he wasnt being allowed in.

Yes, there is a chance you will make it through... there is also a chance you won't. If you have a felony I would be thinking twice or driving seperate from your friends so you dont delay there trip.

Thank you for all your help, we are staying on Oak Island so I sent for a RABC permit just for the heck of it a few months ago & recived it back OK 'ed by surprise, so if need be my partner would drop me off at the boat shuttle from Warroad that goes to Oak Island, so I already have my RABC permit if we get stopped on the water. But has anyone coming back to the US ever have any problem. Another option maybe has anyone ever launched in Warroad & traveled to Oak Via yor own boat?? I have a 1760 Osprey Been on Mille Lacs a Lot in big wind & done ok.
Thank you all for your help

Another option would be to take Public Transportation, Train, Plane, Bus. I have never heard of anybody being turned back when using one of these, your buddies can then pick you up at the Depot or Airport. Fore the return trip you should not have any problems re-entering the U.S. as long as you have the proper documents, Get a Passport makes life easier

I wouldn't say coming back to the US is a "problem" however I will say for me the past few years it has been very inconvenient for me. Some certainly have different political views, and feel getting hassled for over an hour for nothing is ok because of what is going on in the world today....I for one feel these guys at the border need to "pick their battles" better. When I come back from Canada the last few years I generally haven't taken any goods or fish back with me and the US border guys seem to refuse to believe me and stop us for 30 mins to an hour to search through our vehicle,THOROUGHLY......The Canadians search us far faster and actually are more pleasant, I kinda expect better treatment when coming back to my own country?? But that's just my opinion

1969,
If you've got an RABC I wouldn't worry about it. RABC is issued through Immigration, and they do a thorough background check before issuing a pass. Immigration is the agency that handles all these issues, NOT Customs. Apparently, your offense wasn't considered a major crime in Canada. Just have the RABC handy when you cross and give it to the agent along with some sort of photo ID. We do this and they don't even bother to run you through the computer, as the RABC is proof that a background check was recently performed.

Unless, of course, you get an agent having a BAD DAY. But in my experience, you should be okay.

As far as re-entering the US, I really don't have a lot of experience in that area. But I know that we've been "examined" more coming back than going over.

I've never had a problem coming back across. Only time there was anything different was 3 weeks after 9/11, we were coming back across at Baudet. We figured they were going to check us a little closer, and were prepared for a long wiat and thorough search. The Border Patrolwoman asked us not to stand behind her as she was searching the boat. I figured she asked because we looked like we had been in the bush for 8 days, and she was the first woman we came across! As I recall, she did have a nice pooper.

The most bizarre event was coming back from the Canadian side at Detroit, after a day on Lake St. Claire. This was a year before 9/11. Right after we crossed into Canada in the AM, I realized I forgot my wallet. I didn't worry about it too much, and we went to meet the guide up by Mitchell's Bay. On the way back, we joked about how we were going to be stopped, and I would be in limbo. Well we got to the crossing, and all hell broke loose. About 8 dudes, in full armour and masks came runnig from all directions, with guns drawn, towards us. I thought, Holy Cow, This is a bit extreme for just forgetting my ID. Well, as they got closer, they fanned out, and surrounded the car behind us! Seems the dogs sniffed out something they liked! Dogs barking, agents yelling, and the guys in the car behind us were freaking! hehehe. All was quiet when we approached the booth. Standard questions, untill we said we were musky fishing. Then the guy wanted to know where we went, how many, how we got them, any big ones, who did we go with, wtc. Speant 10 minutes talking St Clair muskies, and he never once asked for our ID. Pretty relieved when he finally said to proceed.

just to update, got stopped coming back into the Us yet again last week. This time the case of suspicion was that I had both a state Id and also a Drivers liscense, officer demanded to know why LOL. I have determined that age is a factor that works against you when crossing the border. I am 25, when I go up with pops...never a problem. When I go up with friends, always a problem.

Really, I wonder why that is? hehehe

Came across with my father-in-law one time. No problem, other than we had to wait for his sons, and my brother, who were getting completely torn apart. I can only imagine what my brother said to get that ball rolling! hehehe

One tip of advice I can try to offer is when you get to the border going either way, be as courtieous and friendly as you can be. Have everything you think is going to be checked (ie. documents, passport, liscences). In my experiences if you are kind and respectful to them they usually treat you well. Good luck!
