Location: Quebec, Canada | I have a 300EJ and I had a Tranx PG, both with power handles obviously. They just keep on engaging mid air when casting. I read at some place that this was because of the power handles.. what is the deal with this and how to counter or stop this from happening?
I'm pretty pretty sure a reel engaging mid air on big lures isn't something good on the brakes... $$ |

Location: MN | It's the pinion gear you need to worry about. Counter balanced handles don't necessarily solve the problem either. You can go to the toruble of trying to position the handle downward prior to each cast, and that should prevent it most of the time. However, it's easier and foolproof to just hold the thumb bar down on the cast so that it can't engage no matter if it rotates forward on the cast. |

If holding the thumb bar down, does it reduce the ability to control the line on the cast with your thumb or it's able to do both comfortably?
Is this also a recurrent problem to every reels with power handle or just some? |

Location: MN | It has the potential to do it on any of them but the heavier the knob the more likely. And yes, it is very easy to depress the bar with the base of your thumb while feathering the spool with the top of the thumb. There's a guy selling single knob power handles from NACL's and that knob being foam is so light it may not engage if you were to try it on a Calcutta or something. I put one on a TE and love it but I'm so in the habit of keeping my thumb on the bar that I didn't try it without to see if it would engage. With the Shimano power handle it will. |

Location: Central Wisconsin | The NACL's do it too, a lot until I got in the habit of holding down the thumb bar. My power handle actually snapped in half after setting the hook. Not a fan on the NACL power handle. |

Use the rod to set the hook. Another great reason to hold the rod in your dominate hand. |

| My NaCL was giving me heartburn as well this summer. Brings the blades in great, but reel engages on the cast.
I moved the power handle to the inside slot and re-trained myself to turn the power handle down on the cast. Seems to be fixing it for me. Tried keeping the thumb bar down on the cast, but just could not get a feel for that. |

| As stated; if you have the handle pointed down this will never be an issue. I would also examine how you are letting the baits load up and cast. I have freinds that have had this issue and it was there casting style that triggered it. We could fish for two days both throwing a Tranx and I would never have it happen and they would have it happen with Frequency. The more "herky-jerky" your cast motion the more common this is. If you let baits loads up and give them a smooth snap you should be able to mitigagte this from happening... |

I have an EJ as well, and it does it. Thinking about going to this over the winter. I think if you send him your handle he will tool it up and add this weight.
I had issues with my NaCL handle and I switched to a double paddle, much better and no notice of reduction in power. |

I found this last week and decided to give it a shot. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L85M4SM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I recieved it today and just finished installing. Hopefully I can squeeze some time in over the next couple of days to test it out, but I can tell already it is half the weight of the stock knob and has the feel of the NaCL knob. I did take the two ball bearings out of the stock knob and used one on the bottom and used a spacer and the other bearing on the top to tighten it up right. Feels great.
