Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | I was at a local pond today testing a few new baits and threw out the new triple d crankbait /glider and wow! what a nice looking bait ! although I was a little surprised to see how quickly it floated back to the surface . I was told that the bait would suspend and rise very little if any ? Was I mis informed or are my expectations of the baits suspending qualities a bit too high ?

Location: Syracuse, Indiana | What was the water temperature? I tested a triple D on Webster last Sunday. With a surface temp of 42, the bait rose to the surface fairly quickly, but less quickly than some of my other baits. If I recall, water is most dense at 38 degrees F. As the water temps rise, the water will become less dense, allowing the bait to suspend (that's my hope, anyway). |

Location: London, England | Did you have a leader attached when you were testing the baits? I swapped the mustad hooks for 4x strong 3/0 eagle claw hooks and it suspends perfectly still with my leader attached. |

Location: Eau Claire, WI | My understanding is that they are designed to be neutrally bouyant for the most part. That is the attraction to the lure...crank it down to depth and twitch/pause and it stays there.
I am no expert in plastics engineering but my experience has been that even plastic molded lures can have some inconsistency although much less than wood bodied lures. I have Musky Mania and Bucher stuff that isn't "exact" from lure to lure.
I'm sure if you are not happy with that particular lure that ERC will gladly replace it for you. |

| Mornin' Fellas!
The Triple D is manufactured to a tolerance of +/- 1 gram. This means it is very consistently produced, and is intended to be a suspending bait. BUT, as mentioned before, water is most dense at roughly 39 degrees. The Triple D will become more neutrally bouyant as temps rise. Once again keep in mind that the density of the water changes significantly under different temps, while the bait does not. As mentioned above, a simple swapping out of the standard Mustad hooks to a VMC x-heavy (or equal) will cure what ails ya most every time. Also keep in mind the effect your terminal tackle has on the overall weight of the package. Just for peace of mind...if any of you have any Husky Jerks (suspending cranks), they certainly don't suspend this time of year either...so the cold water does have an effect even on smaller lures. I guess what I am saying is it is impossible to make a bait that is perfectly "neutrally bouyant" under all conditions.

Location: Black Creek, WI | Out of respect for ERC, I won't discuss the specific weight target or how it was selected for the TripleD, but you must realize that even with the EXTREMELY tight and consistent manufacturing capabilities that MDH mentions... 1 gram can make a huge difference when trying to achieve a PERFECTLY suspending lure.
When I was involved with the 3D, it was decided that the lure would be produced intentionally on the light side since it is easier for the customer to add weight.. than remove weight (like changing hooks for example). Unless ERC makes an adjustment, do not expect this bait to perfectly suspend right out of the package... even with warm water temps. When I did the pool demo in Chicago (I'm sure the pool was quite warm) the lure still rose fairly quickly with the standard hooks (but nowhere near the rate of a high bouyancy crank like the Depthraider or Ernie) on the pause. Thus, if I recall correctly the lure was promoted as NEAR neutral bouyancy.
If this becomes an issue and the market demands that their expectations of a perfectly suspending lure right out of the package be met.... I'm confident ERC can and will do it. Heck, simply changing the standard hook from the thin wire Mustad Round Bends to a heavier VMC would do that!!! And I know Matt at ERC likes that hook... so it may just happen some day if you guys voice your opinions on the subject. In the mean time... a simple hook change will get you a perfect suspender without hindering the action of the lure.

| I have thrown a bunch of Triple D's and they are VERY sensitive to hook and leader size and weight. I know this sounds crazy, but in cold water I liked the lure the best with the one light wire hook and one heavier #4 hook. This seemed perfect. All it will take to make the lure suspend better is some heavier hooks. God bless.

I'm sure that the cold water had a lot to do with it since the ice has only been off the pond for less than a week !! Like I said in the origial post I love the action on this bait I think it will make me fish the edge of the weed lines much more ! How does this bait troll ? Has anyone seen how fast and deep this bait can go ????? THE FERD |
