Location: Lincoln, NE | Spiderwire Zilla Braid. It's thicker than regular braid so it doesn't dig in. Regular braid has almost zero stretch, this has about 6% so it's a good compromise between regular braid and mono. Combined with a St. Croix Premier glass rod and the drag set just tight enough so that it doesn't slip from the pull of the lure but does if a fish hits or if you bounce bottom, it can handle the big hits and surges and gives the musky just enough time to hit the lure and turn so it gets hooked in the corner of the mouth rather than rip out from no give. I hold my rod all the time so I can give it rips and pulls when I want and can raise or lower it depending on the structure if I want to make contact or not so I always have my thumb on the spool. It sucks when you're trolling 12" Custom X's and Hurricanes but the benefits are that you get to feel the strike and headshakes and if you hit a snag you can instantly let it into free spool and save your lure. Saved a $75 Headlock a couple times. When I trolled my Big Nasty with regular braid I lost a nice musky cause there was not enough give and it shook free. I haven't lost one yet with this combo. |

| Trolling is an art, mono, braid, single strand wire, they all have their place depending on situations. 50lb mono or heavy Dacron allow baits to stay higher in the water column, short line trolling weeds. Baits on wire give off a different vibration than braid or mono and can be the ticket. You probably need far more set ups to be a proficient troller than caster. I take middle road and comprise on both though:-) |

Location: Waukesha, WI, USA | I used to use musky mono until I lost a world class ski on Rowan Lake while trolling. The line broke like 10' from leader while fighting the fish. My partner and I both saw what looked to be a 60"+ fish. I stll have nightmares. |
