I have been taking my mother fishing for the last 2 years . She will be 83 this year. last year I bought her a zebco 33 . I put 20lb tuf line on it .she will throw out a depth raider or something behind the boat ,ill put the trolling motor down set it at a bought 1 mph and start casting. she don't cast a lot and I only take her out for may be 4 hr trip don't want to take her out for a long time . I put new line on that reel 5 times last year. why cant any one make a reel that the line wont fray after a few trips. is there a better reel to look at for this year?

Some people have had pretty good luck with saltwater spinning gear. I'm not sure about teaching your 83 year old mom to cast musky lures with a baitcaster. But have you thought about what happens when a big fish comes along, whacks the lure she has out, and rips the rod out of her hands??

last year she caught 5 lb pike last year.it was great she got it to the boat made a run brought it back made another run brought it back to the net . I was laughing the whole time. I do set the drag so I can pull the line out so if she dose get a big fish she wont lose the rod . just looking for a better reel.

It might be one of your line guides on your rod.

How about getting her a regular spinning reel like a Penn Slammer or something?

Maybe upping the line to 40 or 50 lb would help.

That reel is about as cheep as you can go. Pretty much any other reel you buy is gonna do better.

I know its a cheap reel. like I said my mother is 83 the reel has to be easy push button cast. I take her walleye fishing slip bobber.so I cast it out for her she reels it in.she has problems with the bail. bait casting problems also.just want a good push button reel. pike master said to try the zebco 33 just looking for a better reel.

Have you thought about getting her a fly fishing setup you can set it up any may you want toss it out and she can just hand line it out as far as she wants as you run the trolling motor. You don't have to put fly Line on it just set it up for pan fish or put a depth raider on it. Iv, caught bass ,pike and muskie doing just that and when you get one on it's lot of fun. Marv.

First off I think its awesome you are taking your Mom out still. My Mom goes on Vacation up north every year but hasnt fished from the boat for years before My Dad passed do to health issues. This year Im determined to get her in my boat.

If your casting why not get a decent baitcaster with a low ratio like a winch? That way you still have a good reel as a back up and she can crank in baits and fish easier.

If you want her to cast a spinning set up will work best. Flipping the bail is much easier than pushing buttons.

Grease the bearings of a baitcaster instead of oil and she'll be essentially snarl-free.
