Just wondering if your 8 inch reef hawg always had that good side to side swing or only after you allowed water to absorb into the bait? Just picked a new 8 incher up and it runs like pooh compared to my six incher. Any ideas would be appreciated on getting it to swing.
thanks again

Kyle,

I think the 6"ers run much a more consistent swing. But, in the fall, I run the 8's, and I really don't care if they run a perfect side to side. I do think they work a little better when they get logged. I also like mine to hang tail low when I buy them. Some I put a split ring on the eye, some I don't.

I've had some good action this fall on my favorite. You saw one of them a week ago! Did you get your bag from UPS yet?

I have discovered that using a heavy titanium leader makes a huge difference on how the larger reef hawgs perform. My theory is the forward weight that is generated by the leader. Give it a try for yourself and let me know what you think.

I have a six inch that has much the same action as a dead broomstick handle, it was the first I ever bought about ten years ago and I haven't bought another since because I was so unimpressed with it. After seeing others work over the years I am going to break down and buy a couple this winter and hope I have better luck with them. As for the old bait, is there anyway to get this reefhawg to do anything but play dead??

Is the cut...PERFECT?

I personally think that a less than perfect side to side action makes for more strikes, especially if it makes for the surface once in a while. The more erratic the better in my opinion.

The 8's are definately not as consistant as the 6's for sure. I'm with Shep as I'm not overly concerned with side to side at all times, but I do like ones that give me the option in doing it. i like to side to side it for about a third of the retrieve and that is the first few twitches and the last, in between I like an erratic(while still keeping the overall side to side somewhat) up down darting. I've found that a leader just longer than the bait attatched with a split ring(snaps take away from side to side) and given short hard snaps are best.

Yup, the cut is as close to perfect as I think it can be, even better than the six incher. I think it just needs some teeth marks and cuts to absorb some water. Then a white head! So I can really tell what it is doing out in the abyss. Maybe I will try some split rings and definitely a heavier leader.
Shep, got the bag in the mail today. Thanks a ton. It serves as my dry storage for my camera in this crappy weather. What was the cost?
Thanks for the ideas, if you have anymore lay them on me

I finally broke down and bought me an 8" Rufuss,10 casts later the damn thing split in half. Not among my favorites, but if I sent it back I'm sure the would gladly replace it.

I just had a big reef hawg split down the middle too. I thought maybe it was the 40 degree water temp I was fishing? Maybe it was just turned on some soft pine.
I have a couple that glide really nice, but usually the ones that get ate are the ones that jump around on a quick snap.

kly, I have twxo that produce well. One sinks tail down (vertically) and it rolls on its back when I jerk and pull it. The other one floats and dives left right when fished with short pulls. I think you could get a weighted 8" reef hawg from R&H or add a fudally weight system yourself. This makes them glide more consitantly. I must admit that the 6" ones glide a lot better/easier
