| How does everyone shape their baits. I am trying to use a dremel but keep messing the blanks up with not being even. I am just trying to round the edges and trying to make a basic crank bait shapes....Please help |

Location: S.Wisconsin | Like everyone said....router table. Be very careful but dont be scared of it if you are scared like myself something bad will surely happen. I can run my baits on the table with a 1/4 round bit without a problem but when i do the top with a 3/8 round bit i have some problems with it wanting to grab......maybe i need a better sharper bit. Location: Oregon | If you are making just a few lures you can use a wood file, it's very easy and very effective. Buy the file at Home Depot, you want one that's fairly aggressive to take the wood off and then come back with sandpaper.
If you use a router be very careful, they will take your finger off in a second.

Location: Oregon | This file is similar to the one that I use.........you can get one for less than $10 at most hardware stores. They are round on one side and flat on the other. If you use a wood like poplar or cedar it goes pretty fast but harder woods like hard maple are more work. Again, this is fine if you are doing small numbers of lures.
You might be surprised at what you can do with a file, once you get used to one you can shape almost anything quite quickly.

| I use the ROUTER TABLE method also--But you need a very sharp bit to eliminate grabbing---I go thru bits fairly quickly but I like my FINGERS so I spend the $$$ on new bits. You can use the sanding table/wheels also--also a drum sander wheel on a table grinder works also. You will get the hang of it. |

Location: Probably Minnesota that time... | I agree with Riverman on this one! That file works great and you are never in danger of losing the tools God gifted you with to fish, and create. Yes your Digits are prescious! It is my main tool, very simple and effective, you can do some nice detail work too. Oh, most of my lures are maple. No mass production 45-50 baits a year for the past 3. I enjoy this part of the process almost as much as painting.
The wood rasp is my friend!

Location: Okoboji | i wear miller metal working gloves, they are not bulky and have a nice layer of leather between your digits and the blade...cant hurt i guess,,,,i am sure i would still get cut but maybe minimize the damage or suck my finger in the router lol. they kinda look like those mechanix gloves.
