I want to start Musky fishing this year on the St Lawrence River. I was wondering what rod size and weight would be good to start with. Also, what kind of reel should be looking at. I'm a New Yorker, I'm poor.

Bass pro probably has the cheapest muskie set-ups that aren't complete junk. I think you can get a combo for well under $200. Size and weight are going to be determined by how you're fishing, casting or trolling, bucktails or crankbaits or rubber.

if you go the BPS route get the 8'6 XH rod with the higher ratio reel, thats a versatile action in any rod line you can throw little blades with it or you can toss big rubber. if youre left handed that reel doesnt come in a left handed retrieve. theres also tackle industries rod and reels like the shimano cardiff 400s which you can get on ebay for like 100 bucks

Gander rod, Pflueger Trion, Abu, or Shimano Cardiff reel. The perfect set up for newby. under $200 for sure and will work even when you get better.

Cardiff = $109
Gander Musky rod = $70 - $80

Do not go cheap on line and a leader. I would get 80 or 100 lb braided line and some good leaders from Stealth.

I have found a lot of decent reels in the Cabelas Bargain cave over the years. I have noticed though that in the past 3-4 years they are harder to find in the cave... Also hit the auction sites and the buy/sell board here. Lots of good deals on lightly used reels.

Shimano Cardiff reel and Shimano Compre rod will get you a decent set up at a good price.

Old School 8'6 Rod 2-10 oz $70 on Ebay
Shimano Cardiff 400 $100ish
Whatever rod you do get just don't buy one under 8'. The longer the better.

Seconded. Get the rod that you are comfortable with. Of course it has to be able to handle lines 15 to 30 lbs. I don't think you need to go more than 65 lbs. in a super-braid line.

...hes fishing on the st. larry who knows what hell hook into/snag in there. Plus with all the shoals, rocks, humps, islands, timber, weeds, etc. go 80-100 lbs braid. those gander rods are ok but if you get any try and find the 8'6 XH in that one too though its only rated for a 2-6 oz lure
