You are a great Dad. You've given a gift that surely will make him beam with happiness.
Perhaps a hook file and a couple lures in the stocking??

Merry X-mas Canada!

And here's how he can enjoy the rig on Christmas Day!

Get a couple mices from the pet shop and fish for neighborhood cats. Have some good gloves on hand (and eye protection) for the release stage. Best part - cats are dumb and can be caught over and over, all you need is a lively mice. Worst part - well, there's no worst part if you dislike cats enough.

My ten year old daughter uses a Gander Mountain IM8 8' MH Muskie rod with a 6500C3 and loves it. She tried 7' and 7'6" rods and found the longer rod to be much easier to cast. The 8' rod simply loads up more and makes casting and figure-8s so much easier. So, I sold the 7'6" Fenwick....

I'd think about giving him an 8' MH rod instead.

Nice starter rig.

I sold my line of Avid rods two years ago and have been sorry ever since. The butts were a little short for my liking, but now I'd sacrifice to be able to be casting them again.

Same rod my 9 year old is casting. His is paired with a St. Croix 250 with a power handle.

He will be steping up to one of my 7'-6" this season or even a new 8' footer. He sure liked the 7'-6" towards the tail end of the season, but may go with a slightly stiffer action if we go new for the 8 footer.

He started out with this rod (6'-6") when he was 5.....with a 5500 but soon switched to the croix reel when I seen he was going to "stick with it."

Nothing better having them tag along. Wait for the first hit on the 8.......almost messed his shorts.

Thanks guys! I'm pretty excited about him getting this Christmas morning!

For now this will work for him as I teach him to use a bait caster and get use to the in and outs. We'll be fishing from a small boat so getting him use to figure 8'ing won't be a problem with the 6'6". If he continues to pursue musky fishing with his dad then I'll upgrade him to a longer rod. He's already a kid interested in fishing and does well with the Quantum PT spinning outfit I gave him a couple years ago.

Yeah, it is a lot different fishing out of a canoe than a 17 ft Fishhawk with large decks. That rod will be perfect for him.

I forget that my ten year old daughter is a little advanced for her age. She has Muskie fished with me since she was six, caught many nice Northerns, and caught her first Muskie, a 45 incher, this year. I forget that most kids aren't like that at her age.

Good luck next year. I hope both you and your son catch some nice fish.

Man was he excited to find out the fishing rod was for him from Santa and not for me! lol

I gave him a quick run down of the drag setting, cast control and setting it (used a Lego car to simulate a lure) then showed him how to use the Staylock snap.
