Posts: 388 | Agree 100% with above poster (welcome aboard). I tie leaders the same way. Figure 8 knot is what AFW recommends on their 7x7 Surfstrand and I have not had a failure yet. They also recommend that you heat the wire before cutting to fuse the ends (also to prevent fraying). I also leave a small tag end on the wire and use two pieces of shrink tube (put them on before tying on the other end) on each end to hold the wire tag down and keep it from fraying or tangling. I have a small finishing nail in my workbench that I use to keep tension on the leader, then use needle nose vice grips to work the tag end of the knot. Now that you know it is that easy, you will undoubtedly want to start tying your own. Posts: 388 | Surfstrand instructions attached. I fugure if it is good enought to catch sharks, it should work fine on muskies. When tying I try to keep the leader side stationary and pull mostly on the tag end. The wire will kink slightly where it pulls through the knot. By pulling the tag end through you put the kink on that side and eliminate the kink on the leader side. The 7X7 wire is much more flexible and actually more durable due to its flexibility in comparison to 1x7. The weakest link on my leaders is almost always the coastlock snap which gets bent over time. Posts: 210 Location: VA | Here is one of the two Leaders I spoke of. Each end of the same leader is pictured. I NEVER said they were "duds" only asked if they were, so read more carefully before bashing statements. Looking at them, I just felt like they were a "little rough" for $5.00 each.
