What do you guys use to shape a lure from a block of wood? I've been carving with a knife and it takes awhile and is sorta hard to get symmetrical results in multiple lures. Thanks

I have what wolftackle84 has. $300 total for the three machines from Home Depot and they made me over 1000 Grunt lures when I first started. Cost me a bit of a fingernail too Be careful and wear gloves and eye protection.

For a cylindrical type bait, use a wood lathe, very quick, very easy, hardly any to no experience needed.

Check out garage sales. to start you might try a jig saw and a wood rasp this will help you shape the bait faster.

Besides garage sales, don't forget to check flea markets, craigslist and your local newspaper. Last year I bought a scroll saw, drill press and belt sander...all for under $150 total. In today's economy, several people are unloading these types of things for necessary cash. Actually, some of the older scroll saws, belt sanders, etc are of much higher quality than most of the stuff you can buy today, so don't let a few scratches and wear scare you.

Don't forget a dremel tool. You have to have one if you are serious about making lures. If you aren't looking to turn out tons of lures, you can use a dremel tool for all of the carving and it doesn't cost all that much. And even when you use the sander and bandsaw, you still will find you need to grab the dremel for one thing or another. And it's about the only tool that will let you make really sculptured and detailed looking baits.
