I just bought a Luna 300 last night after playing with a buddys for a couple hours a few weeks ago and I love it... ill never cast my 6500 C3 again (but Ill keep it on a cheaper rod for trolling)

Im thinking about upgrading all my reels at some point this year and was wondering what other options there are for a high end, high speed reel other than the new Revo Toro? Im currently using C4's for high speed... but after using the Luna, they just feel cheap, and there's a very noticable difference in casting distance... Im a round reel fan, but is the Toro the only high speed option left? Maybe I should give one a test drive and see.... what do you think?

Thanks again guys

I got a Saltist this year which can be used for super speed. Only have 1 day on it, but I'd look into it. It's not super-expensive at approx. $18O new. Time will tell exactly how durable they are.

Thanks mo.
Ive heard the Saltist mentioned a lot on here... whats there gear ratio on those? I seem to remember it being a 5. something to 1.... is it the high capacity of the spool that makes it high speed? and do those have a levelwind or not?

Shimano torium has a 6.2 to 1 ratio for about $180 and shimano trinidad has same gears but is $320. Neither have level wind and both have manual clutch. It took me no time to get used to it and It is very fast. I think it something like 36" of line retrieve in one reel crank. They both come with power handles stock too.

Thanks bob,

Im really wanting thumb bars though, guess I should have been more specific... I know I could do some research but I also know you guys up north dont have any open water at the moment and need something musky related to do Plus im interested in feedback from you all.

Ive come to respect your views and oppinions over what the manufacturer has to say.

Just to clarify, Im not looking for a reel to burn double 10's. Ill use my Luna for that.

Thanks again.

I've got the Saltist STTLW3OHA. Gear ratio is 6.1:1, retrieve rate is 35" per handle turn. Doesn't have a thumb bar, but it does have a levelwind. You also have to manually engage the spool. I got the hang of it after a couple of minutes. I would prefer to not have to manually engage the spool, but the Saltist is the only reel I'm aware of with a levelwind in that style/speed.

Then your post is misleading. Be more specific in what you want to do, because your Luna isn't going to "burn" anything (at least not double 10s, double 8s MAYBE...). Also, burning is relative now a days with the advent of these huge, high capacity, saltwater reels (a "burn" on a Luna isn't ANYWHERE near the same as a Saltist/Trinidad).

If by "high speed" you mean something with a 6.4:1 gear ratio, then that's a different question altogether. "High speed" is generally termed for reels like the Saltist, Trinidad, Torium, Avet, etc. as was mentioned already.

The new saltist has a levelwind and will pick up 47 in. of line per turn! Super fast!

Esox, yes I realize now I should have been more specific... I apologize for that. Im not looking to burn 10's at all. I got the luna because it pulls the 10's well (your right it doesnt "burn" them at all)

What I want to replace are my C4's that I use to burn small bucktails and for jerk baits like dawgs that need that little bit of extra speed to keep them out of the weeds and bottom... I guess what Im really wanting is a Luna quality reel with a 6.3.1 or so ratio (thats what us backwards KY folk call "high speed")... I like the ease of use that a levelwind and a thumbar offers so thats what I plan to get.

After doing some looking it seems that puts me with either a Toro or a Calcutta 200B... I only wonder if the 200B holds enough line? I also would prefer to have clickers on the reels because I do a lot of trolling, and im not sure the 200B has that either, I know the 400 does, but the 400 has like a 5.0.1 ratio----- not what Im looking for.

Thanks for all the posts... some day when I want to burn 10's ill know what to get... 47 in! thats a lot! but not right now.

the clicker on the saltist is very loud, great for trolling or sucker fishing.

Take a look at the curado 300 for burning standard size bucktails. It has a 6.3:1 gear ratio.
