Like the title says... how long? What lengths are you using now? Where does it all end? We've blown thru the 8-9 foot range in just a few years. Now 9'+ production rods are coming out, Thorne Bros has their own 9' Legend Tournament blanks that they can extend to 9'9", and there's not sign of letup. When do the 10 footers start showing up... I take that back there's probably somebody out there with one right now.

Longer rods are not a "trend" or a fad. They are highly beneficial for many many reasons. I would never go back to anything shorter than 8'6. I can't see where shorter rods have benefits. There are 10 footers out there already....

Posts: 130 Location: Chicago | So far I'm using 8 footers right now (although I still have 7' ters I use and like very much) and they work pretty well for me (2nd season) I personally can't afford to buy new stuff each time the status quo steps it up, not that I wouldn't like to just not financially able to. I think that as long as folks can use these long rods and catch fish the sky is the limit.

Twelve feet. Then one day a guy will pick up a 6'6" and realize the convenience of the shorter stick and see that there really isn't much difference in performance. Same number of fish caught. Less hassle. Then the trend will go the other way.

Posts: 1270 | Musky Innovations already has a 10' out there. If you go to Europe they use some very long rods including 10 METER carp rods, yes 10 meters, that's over 33 feet long!

I'm not saying it's a fad or that we'll go back to 6 footers, my question really is where is the point of diminishing returns? Unless you fish off an aircraft carrier an 8'6" figure 8's pretty well, and I can already cast a mile. Generally when you see rods 10'+ they are designed for fishing from shore.... Euro carp rods, salmon/steelhead rods. For muskies, from a boat, when does the added length stop being useful?

But those are not for casting, they telescope the bait out, and the line is tied to the top, hence the name topknot. I do have some 13' salmon rods, that I could have casted some muskylures with, its rated for 3-4oz. I am using it every now and then for trolling, to spread the lines alittle. But its alittle cumbersome to have in the boat Michael

I own rods to 9'3" and could see going out to about 9'6" but don't feel you gain a whole lot after 9'6". weight does become an issue at some point, as does storage, both in and out of the boat, and really I don't feel they will get too much longer..I have used 8'6" and longer for about 9 yrs and haven't looked back nor do I miss the short rods under 8' I use to use..long rods are here to stay..there are soooo many advantages to a longer rod that anyone using short rods is missing out...plain and simple... go big or go home! ; )

Posts: 8792 | Thinking about my 10' surf rods here... If you can use 'em for snook fishing in the mangroves, you can use them casting for muskies. I guess it all comes down to how and where you fish. What Lambeau mentioned above -- long casts, big flats, etc.... Most of the places I fish we're making short, precise casts, and lots of them. For that type of fishing, where you're picking apart spots and casting into little pockets and inside turns, I can't see much use for a super long rod. I admit there have been times where I wished I could cast "wayyyyy over there", but not enough where I'd consider a 10'-0" rod for it. Somebody will try it though. I guarantee, somebody will try it.

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | I suspect that storage problems will somewhat limit rod lengths for many people. Most rod locker won't hold an 8'-6" rod, and you can just get an 8' rod crossway in a shortbox cheve pickup. Okuma's concept of a telescoping rod is interesting. It allows you with normal rod locker storage to be able to handle 9'+ rods. Doubt that we'll see many 10' rods just because of storage problems for most muskie fishermen. Boat manufactures should take a look at this. Longer rods really work! Doug Johnson
