Well, I just back from Wabagoon last night. Steve Worrall and myself fished 3 days Thursday thru Saturday. We each caught a 40" spotted goon muskie. We fished mostly for the big dawgs so numbers were not an issue on our minds. We had 23 fish up with only two fish below forty inches. We raised some great fish on this trip, too bad it was too short and with bad wheather. Some of the sizes of the goon muskies we had up were a 55,52,50,49,48,48 were to top six fish we had going. Not a bad milk run and the fish were thick. The 55" had about a 28" girth and would have pushed 50lbs. That fish made Steve act like a two year old for at least one hour, maybe more.[]

Keven Nash a member of Quad county MI was up there and got his first 50" class fish. He caught a nice 52.5" 40lb goon muskie. He also got a 48" and Duane Landiamier got a 30" walleye on a spinnerbait.

The Goon is a rocky mine field in spots, but with common sence you can navagate it with ease. I enjoyed my trip with Steve and was amazed on his 20 years of fishing the goon that he still get excited when he pops a good pike. [] I also did not kick him in the lake, I had a great time.

For the Me and the Goon, I will return, thats for sure.

Hey:
Glad you guys had a good trip. Your last comment about Steve is really what its all about. Getting fired up over even the little things. I am the same way and i hope it never changes! Makes the trips all the better.[]

Hey Jason, sounds like you guys had a hell of a trip. I know Kevin was looking forward to getting a 50+, glad to see that happen. He must of been on cloud nine. I will be on the Ottawa River next monday-wed. so I hope my trip turns out as well as yours. Take care and good luck with the rest of the year...Ben

I have received some emails reguarding what baits we used. So I thought I would put it up on site. All but 7 of the fish were on Undertakers working them surface to subsurface, and the rest were on Ghosttails and Topper Stoppers and Marv's Spinnerbaits.

The fish would follow the Undertakers, zig zaging behind them with thier backs out of the water, sometimes it was spooky.

Hey Jason, what method did you use to measure the girth of the 55 incher?

And why didn't you use a bait they would bite instead of one they would just follow?[:)]

Firstsixfeet,

That was an educated guess from both of us on the girth. There is not a true way to measure the girth on a following muskie, but Worrall has caught these fish and has a very good judgement on what they are. I also agree with him on the size and the whitefish forage might have something to with that.

Yes, we did try other things, but they almost always wanted to come after the undertaker. I caught my fish on an undertaker, so it sure seemed to be the bait they wanted. We just did not have the right wheather pattern to trigger the big boys. Maybe next time, but thats what we get for only trying a three day trip.[]

The most telling commentary I heard during the trip was from Kevin Nash after releasing his 52.5...He said, "I looked down at her in the water as she swam away, and said to myself, THAT is not anywhere near as big as some of the fish I have seen here.."

Firstsixfeet, the fish I saw was a PIG. I caught a few up there over the years, and this was a very good one, but not the one I went back up there for, that is for sure.

She did not show, and I thank Jason for his infinite patience as I beat the tiny spot she lived in two weeks ago not less that 6 times, and for an hour each time, without seeing a thing there.

Anyone wanting a chance to go estimate the girth on one of the Goon pigs themselves...

Take a look at the announcement on the opening page of MuskieFirst, the lodging will be priced right!

Lets see, four days off to fish the PMTT on Tonka in September, or four days on the Goon... might be a tough choice....
