| So my boat partners dad calls him up Saturday of the opener. He is fishing on Long lake (the rearing pond for muskies) I think washara county. They just opened it up to muskie fishing so there were 30 boats out there opening morning. He stated that there were 15 nets directing muskies into a pen(horseshoe looking thing. Scotts dad saw the dnr killing the muskies, so he went over to ask what was going on. The guy said that they were killing them because they couldn't transport them to greenbay! Can anyone clear any of this up for me? Is his dad just trying to get me going or is there truth to this. Scotts dad also said some of the fish they killed were bigguns - 53, 51, 2-49's

| Long Lake was the lake that was the initial brood lake for Great Lakes strain fish. i believe at one time it was closed to muskie fishing.
however, there was a lot of resistance to it from the local lake association.
now that the lake is no longer needed for brood stock purposes, the lake association has been lobbying the DNR to stop managing the lake for muskies.
i remember last year a lower size limit was proposed through the Conservation Congress, but i can't find anything in this years' regulations...with the 3 year process it might not go into effect until next year. the intent was to allow locals to remove any muskies they catch.
i'd be very surprised to hear the DNR was actually killing the existing muskies; that just doesn't make sense.
the local lake association? maybe...but i'm sure they could get in trouble for wasting a natural resource.

Location: Green Bay, WI | Because of VHS this year the DNR will not be taking eggs from Green Bay muskies. They were hoping that Long Lake could possibly hold a large female or two yet that they could use. I haven't heard if this worked or not but I would bet if the DNR had nets out that is what they were doing. |

Technically, they never really managed the lake for muskies. It was a brood stock lake and it was promised by the WDNR to the Lake Association that it would only be temporary. The last few year they did get milt & eggs from the muskies on the Fox River. They have been removing muskies in Long Lake over the last few years and placing them in Green Bay (maybe elsewhere like Bago?).
I am with lamboo that I don't think the WDNR would just club them. It would be a waste. I'm sure if they were short of funds to move these fish, they would have called the local MI clubs for help (funds or manpower). |

Location: north central wisconsin | First off, I doubt that there were 30 boats out there on the openner with the DNR placed nets out. It is unlawful to fish within 500' of the nets used for those purposes, and when the nets are in Long(I've seen them), they are placed in areas of the lake which would really make it impossible to fish anywhere and be 500' away. That said, the nets are still out but I am not sure if they've gotten anything, though I am sure they would not have killed what was netted. Lastly, I have heard that the nets were out in a few of the 'pool' lakes and that at least one egg laden female has been utilized for spawn(this was a rumor floating around the past couple days). |

Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I spoke with Lee Meyer of the GB DNR. You are correct, they are not able to take eggs from GB because of the VHS. As of Tuesday this week they have not gotten any eggs yet. One week they got males and the next females but not at the same time yet. If they are not successfull soon there will be no spotted musky to stock this year. To bad they didn't start stocking the Winnebago system sooner. |
