Picked up a Phat Boy topwater bait by Musky Buster today. I had been rereading old posts and looking at the video on site. Thought it might be a good smaller topwater to add to the arsenal. I do have two questions....

1) The finish looks rather lightweight. Does the bait get water logged qucikly? Should I water proof the Phat Boy before using it? A coat of envirotex?

2) Any suggestions on using it? slack line? Quick taps? longer pulls?

Thanks in advance...

Quick short taps, its a very lightweight topwater. I haven't noticed mine taking on any water so it should be ok.

I love my Phat Boy. That being said, the paint job isn't the best so if you're concerned about it getting water logged you might want to add an extra clear coat or something. I think it looks cool with all the paint gone. Fish don't care.

Use a MH rod and short taps. You can fish this bait REALLY fast and it works very well at high speeds, something I haven't found much in the "newer" baits. I also like to throw mine on a fluoro leader. It really gets good side to side action and does not impede it at all. later.

Johnny,
Here's my take on the ole Phat Boy...leave well enough alone!!!
I really like the Phat Boy the way they are because the lighter weight lets me work them a bit faster than other heavier walk the dog type baits. This has been my most productive Phat Boy, you can see that it has quite a bit of hook/tooth rash, but it still works great.

As far as any tips, the lighter weight is the reason I like the Phat Boy so much. I like to cover water faster with the Phat boy, so I usually quick hop it throught the retreive. When I do get some intrest, I can slow it down and get it to swing side to side further, but....the main reason I use the Phat Boy is that it DOESENT trave too far from side to side. When a fish decides to eat it, they usually dont miss.
The Phat Boy is light enought that you can throw it on a bit lighter rod and keep using it long after other heavier baits will wear you out.
Dont let the size fool you, they work.

That is exactly why I bought it. A topwater to throw with a lighter rod, worked realy fast, and with a tight side to side action.

Thanks...

T the front hook and it won't carve up the belly so bad.

At the risk of sounding like Michael Jackson I love the little phat boys!!,,I dont think any bait made resembles a baby duckling better with its short chubby shape and its bounce and bob back and forth,,Ive found this bait gets better with use/age,,the hook scrapes actually 'tame" it a bit,,when you first buy one it has more bounce and not has much wide swing,,but has the hook scrapes deepen it seems to hug the surface better and swing out more,,dont know why???dont know how many hours Ive spent over the last three years throwing these,,only negative is they dont do well in any medium or heavier chop,,,I wish he would make a 8 inch,,,anybody have any badly grooved ones Ill swap ya something?????

If you want to see some great video on the Phat Boy, check out the original Badfish Outdoors Muskie Madness. Go to the Gregg Thomas clip and you can see how well they work!

that video is really amazing, plus gregg really shows how to work the bait just by watching him use it. there was also a recent article about guides favorite baits in musky hunter and gregg talks about the phat boy.

I know a buddy of mine lost a mid-40 inch fish on LOTW when the nose eyelet pulled out at boatside. I am not knocking the bait at all, I'm just saying to keep an eye on it and make sure it's still screwed in tight at all times.'
