Posts: 617 Location: Clintonville, WI | All right all.....I'm not what one calls handy, but even I should have been able to figure out these problems by now. I have two baits where the rear tail/blade will not spin: Hi Fin Twin Teaser Tail (big size) and Holcombe Low Rider (small size). During retrieve it looks line they are "catching on something", but I can not find that to be the problem. I have examined, bent blades, bent through wire (gently), tried different retrieve speed and everything else I can think of to get the rear blade to spin on both baits. Short of trying some lubricant, which could affect the paint, I'm at a loss. Both are basically new from this summer so use/muskie pounding/etc. are not the reasons. Anyone have fix suggestions in general? Anyone have the same problem with the baits that I mentioned? They were bought @ R&H.....is this a return situation?

| Find Lee Tauschen's article in a recent Esox Angler about tuning topwaters. He offers up a wealth of tricks, including your baits. | |||

| Exactly, that is a great article. I can fax it to you if you don't have it. | |||

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Many times it is the 'cup' in the blade that stops it from spinning because the water 'dams' in the center of the blade instead of sluicing off and spinning the tail. Start with the blade perfectly striaght and at a 90 degree to the tail, then bend it in just a bit at a time without cupping the blade until she spins. Then cup it alittle to get the desired pop. OR: Read Lee's article, he's a topwater master.

Posts: 617 Location: Clintonville, WI | Thanks, gents.....another quality "service" of this board and satisfied customer Mr. Worrall, sir, I may not have bent the blade enough as it turns out, let alone to 90 degrees. I'll give that a whirl first. Mr. Crook, you have a PM.

Posts: 2024 | Also, try adding a small bell sinker up front to see what that does. If you don't like it, you can always take it off.

Posts: 1046 | When the back blades are not working properly its more then adding weight problem, its the design its self. The only real fix is to complete rebuild. I feel there are a ton of lures out that work only somewhat or need to be re-done before the first cast. I have a pet-peve about lures that waste casts and dont operate correctly or TANGLE HOOKS ON CASTS! These lures are a waste of my valuable fishing time/money and I feel alot of these expensive baits out have not been tested long enough before being put on the market. Just wait till this winter when everyone starts writing their complaints about all these new./hot baits that are a waste ! Truthfully, it saddens me the hype on some baits that work like crap and are 30/50$ apeice! Try before you buy through friends when ever possible, there will be alot less disappointments in your box of tricks. Edited by The Handyman 9/14/2005 8:03 AM

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Sometimes the wood or polywood swells slightly and causes issues in the way of tolerances too. This has happened to a few of my hi fins and as Handy said, a rebuild is sometimes in order in those instances. That usually occurs on an older lure that once worked well though.

| Mike, did you get the article I faxed to you and did that help with your problem? I love Lowriders and Magnum Lowriders, but you do need to tune them after they are smashed by fish. Many topwaters need adjustments right out of the box, and almost all need tender loving care after meeting MR or MRS MUSKY! Steve | |||

Posts: 617 Location: Clintonville, WI | Steve, I did get the article, THANKS. Will get to read it tonight and try some of the options in the article and from here on the board. If nothing works and I get anywhere near the thought of re-build.....they are going back to R&H. Like new lures (hit the water once) should not be that troublesome. Jim, Gene and the crew are pretty good about those things.
