| Just looking for opinions here. I will be putting about a third of my miles on with a Ranger 620 behind the vehicle. Based on my budget, I have narrowed down to a '99 Suburban w/ 5.7 and around 80,000 miles or a 2000 Yukon XL with 125,000 miles. Wife prefers the look and features of the 2000 but I tend to think lower miles and the old reliable 5.7 would be a better long term option. I do all my own work on my vehicles and will keep this til it is junk, generally 300,000 miles min. What would you buy and why? | |||

Posts: 107 Location: milwaukee | I'd buy the '99: lesser mileage, likely would be cheaper purchase price, proven 5.7L. 2000 was the first year for the 5.3L I think - unproven? FYI ToddM, the Yukon "XL" is a Suburban with GMC badges. BTW, I have a '99 Sub with 80k - and it looks like I'm gonna need a new tranny. My next truck will be a Ford.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I'd say it depends on a few things, was the yukon ever used to tow? was the suburban? what engine in the yukon? 350 in suburban very good... 5.3 if in the yukon, I've heard its not the best for towing(this according to my mechanic who traded his 5.7 tahoe in on a new 5.3 tahoe)... if 5.7, 6.0 or bigger in the Yukon it should be a good tow motor...

| I've had the 5.4 Ford and 5.7 GMC and the 5.4 absolutely kicked the 5.7's a$$ in all aspects. | |||

| I have a 99 Silverado 1500 new body style w/ 5.3 It has more torque than my 97 w/ the 5.7. It tows my big Aluma and my fiberglass pop-up no problem. This 5.3 vortec has 130,000 now and all I've replaced is the fuel pressure regulator and the shift solenoids in the tranny. The only concern I would have is that your Ranger is a heavy load but that ranger trail trailer is a gem with the cool hub brakes etc.... The new vortecs are nice and I'll buy another when its time..... LVD Hunter | |||

| I've had both engines in a Tahoe.The 5.3 gets a tad better mileage and seems to tow a little better.Seat of the pants feel is the 5.3 has a little more low-end grunt.Having said that I would buy on condition of the vehicle.I routinely put 125,000 miles on my work car in 3 years.Easy miles,often original brakes.Compare that to a "work"truck that gets beat on daily but has only 45,000 in 3 years.I'll take the 125,000 mi. rig every time.Good luck! | |||

Posts: 335 Location: Pulaski, WI | The 2000 is a way nicer vehicle in almost every way. It was completely redesigned, quieter, smoother ride, better turning, interior etc. I'm not an expert on engines, but I really don't think that GM makes a bad one, at least the v8's.

Posts: 202 Location: Angola, IN | I have a 1999 Silverado ext. cab 2WD. It has 109,000 miles on it. Besides preventative maintance (oil changes, transmission flushes, etc.) I have not had a problem with engine or transmission at all. I've pulled boats 2500 miles round trip several times. And I'm 2.5 hours to my home musky lake. Good truck, better motor. That 5.3L has plenty of a$$.
