Subject: treble hook quantity

Does anybody know if there is a quantity restriction on the amount of treble hooks that can be placed on a lure that is used in the state of Wisconsin. I have always believed it to be 3 trebles per lure max. Is this correct?

Thanks,

Corey,
Right from the DNR reg book

It is illegal—

Angling Methods and Lures
• to fish with more than three hooks, baits, or lures.

I think the three hooks refers to setlining but I am not absolutely sure. The way I read it as long as the trebles are on one lure you are unlimited, but you may want to ask a warden.

Ironically, or for surveillance reasons . . . . whatever . . . . I do have a warden for a neighbor. Not a real personable guy though that's for sure. I think I will find somebody else to ask.
Thanks for the input though Norm.

Pretty sure any # is OK on a single lure. Remember the older flatfish with spreaderhooks, even the smaller sizes had 4 trebles.

Good one Norm, had me rollin this morning on that one!!! And by the way there is a bar just down the street too, big suprise in Wisconsin huh? Ol Muskyballs, er I mean muskynutz found me an answer which I copied below.
Thanks muskynutz!!!

Dear Chris,
It is not illegal to have more than three hooks on one lure. The law you were probably thinking about is designed to keep people from hooking more than three fish at the same time. It includes hooks as well as lines since some rigs are designed to have more than one hook on a given line. These rigs would be designed to catch a fish for each hook. A lure such as you describe is designed to catch one fish at a time therefore you can have more than three treble hooks on a given lure.

I hope that answers your question fully, if not feel free to contact us again. Also if you have specific musky related questions or comments you can contact Tim Simonson at [email protected]
