Looking at purchasing a home on the lake. Curious how it is for muskie these days? All the posts I could find were from 10 years ago, but mentioned it being a semi-tough egg to Crack but has big fish. Also saw someone in 2019 mention most of the weeds are gone in the main lake. Thanks!!

Still tough, but also gives you access to a lot of other bodies of water that can be less tough.

Cass is still a productive muskie lake/chain as long as you consider that it's super clear water. If you don't mind trailering around a bit, the area can't be beat for quality MN fish.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Definitely love exploring different lakes but also glad to hear Cass is productive if you put in the time. I love breaking down and learning new lakes and am pretty familiar with fishing clear water.

We used to fish it most weekends in July through September years ago when I lived in the Twin Cities. That may not help much now but there are some really nice fish to be had there. It is different now than what it was 15-20 years ago for sure. And that is due to the weeds being mostly gone on the main portion of the lake from the Knutson dam all the way to the big main landing on the other side of the lake. I felt Allens Bay was a bit darker water, but I do not fish that as much as the main lake. The PMTT a couple of years ago did really good there as it was very overcast conditions keeping the fish up on the structure. Lots of fish were caught and moistly on Cass - not Bemidji. I go there about every 3rd year now and we still manage to do rather well. Whenever I fish there, I still have a feeling I could get my largest muskie! I have been there 3 times in the last 7 years for longer extended weekends, and we have caught a good number of fish 49.75 (2nd largest fish caught in PMTT in 2023), 49.5, 48, 45, 44, 44, 43, 42, 42 and 41. I still enjoy fishing there and it does not seem to get some of the pressure I have seen on other MN lakes. As other guys have mentioned on the post, the other lakes are really good too. I have fished Kitchi and the Pug Hold but do not have experience on any other waters. I always wanted to try Pike Bay and Big but just stayed on Cass due to the limited weekend time frames. A bit of exploring would get you a lot more water to fish for sure. In my opinion it is a really good body of water to fish, and I still enjoy my time there when I fish it! Best of luck on the home if you decide to purchase it. If you do, I.M. me and I can help you start with some areas that have been good for us. Take care...

When we were up there several years ago, I was advised to stay away from town at night, pretty sketchy folks.
I just googled crime stats from a website google found (no claim to accuracy) but from the looks of it things are not so bad up there. m

Maybe its gotten better recently, one can only hope. In the early 2000's I stayed and fished the area a few times and remember a blind man getting beat to death by an ax handle downtown and an elderly couple robbed and duct taped in their closet only to be found dead later.

I hardly ever post. I come here often just to see what's going on in the world of muskie fishing. I no longer fish muskies. My body just can't handle the load....My family owned a place on Buck Lake for 45 years, which if you're not familiar, is on the north shore of Cass, with about a 10' opening, separating the 2 lakes. As far as crime in the area, we always heard about neighbors having property stolen. I can honestly say we never had anything stolen. I love Cass Lake. I love everything about Cass Lake. In all those years, I had the pleasure of catching many large muskies. My personal best was 49.5". I netted a 49 and a 48.5" for my good buddy Brian Jones. We saw many fish much larger. I hooked and lost a couple fish well over 50". As far as the crime some people are speaking of, I grew up on the eastside of Indianapolis. The crime in Cass Lake wouldn't even make the newspaper in Indianapolis most of the time! Good luck learning Cass! If you want to PM me, I'll be glad to share some of our spots. I would spend a lot of time down on Bike Bay too! Todd
