I don't really need a new reel but after spending a day fishing on Eagle Lake with a TranX 401 I borrowed from the lodge and having a gift certificate to the Musky Shop was thinking about picking one up. However, I saw that a number of folks in a post were having issues with their reels. Have those concerns been addressed or is this just not a good idea?
I spent the day casting in winds that ranged from 20 to 30+mph and didn't even have one backlash with a reel that I had never used. Seemed very smooth.

I have a few, including one that's never handled anything lighter than a pounder, and they've held up fine. The only issue I've had is that after a few long casts, line tends to bunch up on one side. Revos do the same thing for me.

You can avoid the issue by making sure your line is perpendicular to your spool at the start of your retrieve, but that's not always feasible. I normally use the 400 for big rubber and gliders, where there's normally a bit of a countdown after the cast, so it's not an issue for me.

I have both a 500 PG and 400 PG and love them both. Backlash? With these reels you have to try on purpose to get one.

Great reels in my experience and I have several. One issue that they seemed to have corrected is the drags loosening over time, ie, a day of casting. You'd have to regularly check that it was tight, lest you set the hook on a fish and the drag slips. But I think they've corrected that, as I haven't noticed it on the 2-3 newest ones I've purchased. (I had the drag washers replaced on the ones with issues).

I'd also recommend that you buy the version with the power handle (vs. a paddle). Musky Shop sells both the power and the high speed Trans reels with the power handle included.

I have two 400s, on 300, 200 and two 150s. I clearly like them. Only issue is you should check your drag at the beginning of everyday. As you should anyways.

Otherwise, rock solid for me.

Drag problems on early ones which have been corrected.
Dave's Reel repair will fix the issue on the early Tranx for about $25.00. They will also do a complete service on the reel, if that is what you want.
They service reels from around the world...THE BEST...

Tranx 400 is in my opinion the best musky reel ever made from an overall standpoint. Not quite as good as the 500 for pounder and up sized rubber but it also casts a lot better than a 500 with the middle 90% of baits that makes up the majority of what people throw. I have 4 400 hg’s, 1 400 pg, and 1 500hg. Only reel I might pick up is the new high speed Calcutta conquest. There’s a reason why almost everyone that doesn’t have a sponsor/deal with a reel company uses tranx.

Like above, I have 14 400’s 6 400HG’s, 2 300’s, 2 300HG’s, and 5 500HG’s. The Tranx are the most durable reels I have ever used. Those in my boat with other reels have never said “I prefer my xxx reels to your Tranx”.

Have you tried the Conquest? Not challenging, honest question. Thinking about one for a big(ger) dawg rod.
