Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota | This year I want to start using straight wire on stuff like bucktails, topwaters and jerkbaits. I have always tied my own floro leaders and never had one fail but i seem to be getting a lot of conflicting opinions on what the best way to use straight wire is. I see some guys twist them just like a bucktail, some people crimp, and some people have twists with a lot of space between them. With as cheap as wire, swivels and welded rings are I would way rather build them myself but also don’t want to make them in a weak way and leave a bait in a fish. What have you guys done to make as strong a connection as possible? |

| A few years back a lot of guys were copying the saltwater guys using a haywire twist. I believe most are now simply using a tight twist. I simply use a round nose plier to form my loop and a plier of vise grip to finish the twist. I even use them on swimmin dogs - you get a lot fewer dog balls |

Haven't ever had one fail on me. |

| I make my own, too. After a thousand trys I landed on a 9" 240# straight wire leader as perfect for glide baits. Swivel on one end and a Stringease snap on the other. I put a small Bucher Super Split Ring on the swivel and tie my 80# PowerPro to that. The snap is connected to another split ring on the nose of the bait. Man, those gliders dance; I can even make them slurp the surface like bass eating bluegills.
I use 80# flouro for Suicks, all hair baits, and surface baits. Quick strike rigs and jig/creature leaders are made from crimped braided wire.
Look to the saltwater folks for leader supplies. "Tooth Proof" wire and braided wire.
Last, get a Du-Bro Quick Twist tool. It's terrific except it gets a little tough with straight wire over 200#.

| Boggs tackle maker is a wise investment for leaders. Heat shrink the wraps , helps protect main lines and clingy weeds . Fluorocarbon is good for bass fishing and not much else ! |

Location: Brighton CO. | I have Hagens brand wire twister for making leaders and also a Du-Bro Bucktail maker for making bucktails.
My leaders are straight wire 174 # and 240#. I don't need any more bucktails but there fun to make. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Ranger, I'm wondering why you put a swivel on a wire leader you use for jerkbaits? There's usually not much line twist involved with casting and reeling these; just one more thing to fail. Besides, you'll see when you pause that the swivel will often cause the front of the leader to sink. This can affect the action of the bait.
I tie right to the wire loop even if I have to cut the swivel off my stealth leader first. m |

Location: Walker, MN | A round nose pliers and a side cutters is really all you need. Works great for 174# wire and .051 bucktail wire. Just leave enough tag end so you don't hurt your fingers when making wraps. |

this...and flex the tag end so it breaks off so as not to leave a stub that could could catch above the leader, and cut you off..

My Hagen's leader maker never leaves sharp ends and with my Du-Bro bucktail maker I use a Dremel to cut off my wire and if you do it wrong it will leave nasty sharp end that will cut your line and your hand! |
