Posts: 1 | I had an experienced Muskie angler who has been fishing long before I was born tell me he doesn’t fish 100lb braid because it might put off the fish. And 80lb doesn’t!? What about your 174lb wire leader!? I get how one might make the argument that 100 vs 80, the 100 might cast shorter less backlashes etc although very minimal if not any difference at all. But just had to make a post to call BS on the fish being weary of 100lb cortland haha. Anyways, have a good day. Let me know what you think.

While I would certainly agree that the line diameter isn't going to spook a musky on bait being cast and retrieved, I wonder if it makes a difference on a jigged bait, like a Bondy where they might scope it out for a while. I know walleye fishermen using jigs like the least visible line possible. Have no idea, just curious.

Posts: 8814 | I'd think that the hooks, the wacky colors, blades, tinsel and everything else that makes a lure not resemble anything food would scare them off long before the diameter of the line. If they were as intelligent as we give them credit for, we'd never catch them.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | LOL I use 30lb Power Pro on my walleye rods. Catch just as many fish as my buddy using 4lb mono and I spend a lot less time retying on new jigs ![]()

When you get a 50 you will know, but it will probably take a downrigger to get one. I can't believe with the amount of salmon fishing you do you don't have riggers.

Posts: 8814 | I tried tying the flouro directly to the braid, solid ring on the flouro, split ring on the lure for a couple seasons. Drawbacks: 1. You have to put a split ring on every lure. No big deal. Buy good split rings and check them often. I only had one instance where the solid ring started to work its way into the split ring, and that was a split ring that came on the lure and should have been replaced many moons ago. 2. Certain lures have a tendency to roll if they foul or you reel them too quickly, which will cause line twist without a swivel. That can easily be remedied by not working them too fast, or picking a lure that runs right. Some just don't. Advantages: 1. You eliminate the potential failure of crimps, swivels and snaps. 2. You eliminate the weight of a swivel and snap., which can affect the action of your lures. (really only matters with small lures though) 3. If you believe that any terminal tackle is "too visible" to the fish, this solves the problem. 4. You can make the leader any length you choose, and when the flouro gets beat up, you just need to cut and retie. 5. If you do a lot of night fishing, and you make your leader the right length, you know to start your figure 8 as soon as the knot hits the tip top. It works well, IMO. I do get tired of the sound the knot makes clicking through the guides, but that's far less frustrating than picking up a lure to throw back at a big fish and finding that the end of a stay-lock snap won't fit through the eye.
