I bought my dad a st Croix tide master 8'h last year with a Shimano symetre 4000 50# line. He seems to like it. He mostly throws small Jakes

I have a 7ft 9in Okuma Cruz MH rod which has a casting weight rating up to 8oz.

The rod was designed to cast lures to large and power SW species, but it is equally at home throwing soft plastics and twitch baits for musky.

I use a Bass Pro Bionic Blade 7' heavy action, with a Shimano Stradic 4000 and Suffix 832 and have landed tigers up to 50" and purebreds up to 47.5" on that setup.

I have a 7'9" Cabela's musky rod rated for 3/4 to 4oz. lures and up to 40 lb. line. I have a Shimano 4000 and 5000 FK spinning reel that I can mount on it. I have yet to catch anything on it, but it is a good casting rod..... davemp

Shimano Stadic FK 4000 or 5000 size. Spoke to Shimano prior to buying several early last year. They informed me this reel is virtually as good as any Shimano spinning reel and far less expensive than many other options. Bought them via Walmart saved $40+ dollars.
Pairs up great with a St. Croix's 8' Mojo Musky rod. BTW I bought Cabela's musky rod for spinning. Like the St. Croix better.

I like the Stradic FKs, but the Spheros SW would have been a much much better choice for a musky reel for the price from Shimano.

The Spheros reels are built to handle large and powerful fish (the beefy metal frame), high drag settings (the drag is carbon fiber while the drag of the FK is felt), and heavy cranking (the main gear is massive).

The reel I use is a Clash 6000.

It is one of the cheapest spinning reels in its size that uses a brass main, the drive train is very tough.
