Posts: 427 | I was thinking about picking up a c4 and putting it on a TI xxh to be used for rubber and big twitch baits like 10 inch jakes. How well will the c4 hold up for this application?

Posts: 32930 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I'd look at the new Max Toro too. It's built in the Revo Toro line with the gearing and drag you need, and retails for about a buck and a half. I ran this reel all year, and it exceeded my expectations. I actually find myself picking up that reel/combo as often as the Toro S. They did a nice job on the reel and the price is good. http://www.tackledirect.com/abu-garcia-max-toro-baitcasting-reels.h... http://www.baspro.com/Abu-Garcia-Ambasadeur-C4-Clasic-Round-Baitcas...

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I used my C4 as a rubber reel for a summer. Can't say it did a bad job. As for 10" Jakes, I think they will wear out the gears, just too much resistance.

Posts: 396 Location: Northern Illinois | I wouldn't target the C4 for those bigger baits. While it could certainly do it, it will be just a matter of time before it doesn't feel as smooth when you reel it in. I did that and that's what I got... I actually really like the C4 but would I use it for Mepps/Ghost Tails, 6-7 inch twitch baits, medium spinner baits, 6 inch gliders, Hawg Wobbler etc, I'd go with the bigger gears for the Rubber and 10 inch Jakes.

Posts: 1039 Location: North St. Paul, MN | I've used the C4s for twenty years. If you are using a 6500 C4, I think you'll be fine. If it's the 6600 C4, good luck. When they switched it from the push button to the thumb bar in the 6600, they messed something up. I've had the same two 6500 C4s for nearly twenty years and a 6500 TC (same guts as a C4, I think) for 15 years and they're all going strong! The two 6600 C4s I had are both back in Spirit Lake, IA after one use on one and about a two months on the other. I use mine for pulling jerkbaits, dawgs, topwaters, and ripping cranks (picking up slack).

Posts: 1274 Location: Walker, MN | Daiwa saltist 20 is bullet-proof, perfect for a less expensive dedicated big bait combo. It's not great for casting blades into the wind, but for lobbing pounders, it's a great reel. Poor man's tranx!

Posts: 1405 Location: Detroit River | I'd look into other options for pulling big baits. I did not have good success with the C4 when using it for jigging Bondy baits. Blew out the AR on the 3rd trip using it. It's fine for the smaller less pulling baits.

Posts: 114 | Been using 6500 C4's (30 IPT, 6.3:1 ratio, 15 lbs max drag) for 15 years. Updated my units with Boca bearings and carbon matrix drag washers years ago. I still use them, they feel like part of my hand. I'm now a proud owner of the Toro S and Beast. These are very different animals; all in a good way. Toro S 60 (29 IPT, 5.3/1 ratio, 25 lbs max drag). Beast 60 HS (34 IPT, 6.2/ ratio, 25 lbs max drag) Use the right tool for the job. New models for "large" jerk baits - rubber and blade baits Use the C4's for small to medium .

Posts: 1209 | I'd agree I used to use c4's but I wouldn't imagine going back to them after the new developments by Abu. I personally would question putting higher drag pressure into a c4 because I was able to set the hook on a bas and blow the reel off the base with factory drag.
