I went out for a few hours today and brought up 7 or 8 muskie, with most on a Jackpot, and all the fish I saw were within 1 hour.   Are there any modifications that people have gotten to work, or do I just need to keep casting to get a good hook up.  3 of them came out of the water after the thing, but all but 1 missed it.  The one that did get a hold of it did so at the boat side while I was trying to get the one that followed to hit.  He came out from under the boat, out of the water and by the time I decided I should set the hook it bouced it's head off the front deck of the boat and left the lure in the carpet.  The other fish stayed there just as shocked as I was.  I also had 3 follow it up to the boat at the same time.  I no longer believe they are a solitary fish.  It was an exciting day, but none landed.  Any tips on follows on the jackpot or proven throwback lures for this.   Thanks.

I have a total of 2 topwaters, 1 is a jackpot, one a topraider, I must have a little confidence in them.....
Muskies love to follow the thing....its MADDENING!! But on the flipside, at least you're moving them. Muskies are going to miss it, the key sometimes is to just be SSSSSSSSLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWW on the reaction to set the hook, in reality I think the best way to just keep pressure on the line, then when the fish is freaking out (just figured out it has hooks in its face/mouth/gills etc.) then start the fight.
I work the bait a bunch of different ways: slow, fast, steady and erratic. My BEST hookup percentage seems to come when i keep the glide a little tighter, dont allow that LONGassed slide slide slide.....keep the bait moving less forward then side to side, but keep the slides much tighter than you CAN do them. I (IMHO) think that the fish can zero in on the bait alot better when it isnt going SO FAR side to side.
Fig8s? I have about 100 Jackpot follows, not one fish that hit after the turn.
And remember that sometimes the muskies are just fu**ing with you....

I've searched for all of the previous Jackpot post and compiled a few mods:

Move the front hook hanger back one inch.

Epoxy the hook hangers into the bait.

T the hooks.

Everything that I wanted to say has been.So I will vouch for...
1. Keeping a tighter glide with the bait.
2. Moving the front hook back a inch.
3. T'ing the hooks.
ooh yea, and feel the fish before you let em have it !!!

Move it faster with a tighter walk.

Also realize if you were throwing ANYTHING else you would most likely have NO action.

Thanks for the tips.  I've never personally had one hit at boatside before this, I wasn't even doing a Figure 8. I kept it on the surface and was really snapping it hard making it go side to side, but not forward very much when the other one came out of no where and took it.  Gotta love surface baits though!!  Went back yesterday morning and they were no where near as active.  Saw a few, but they were lazy follows and subsurface.

You can also try using the "Doc" topwater. The front hook has already been moved back for you and there is no need to epoxy the hangers because it is plastic. I like the Jackpot but the Doc has improved on some of the jackpots weakneses (sp).

Davep, thanks, I'm always looking for a reason to add more lures to my small but growing arsenal.

Another one to try is a "Viper"....it's a heavier bait than a Jackpot so it rides lower in the water and is a bit harder for a muskie to pop it up in the air when it thrash's at it. I have yet to have a hook up problem with it while using a faster tight glide. It really will carve a trail in the water and has a nice tail whip popping noise.

Something for you to try is to fire a creeper or a hawg wobbler out after they have followed or blown up on the bait. The nice slow moving action on these baits will put those fish in the boat.
