In a time of great strife in the muskie world, there is but one thing to do to relieve us all of the in-fighting and bickering: A NEW CONTEST!!!

Here's the rules:
-post a pic of your most beat up bait
-tell us at least one story of triumph or tragedy that involves this bait
-PRIZE for this event: MuskieFIRST will replace, in the same color and size, the bait displayed to the winner of the contest.
(if it is NOT available, we will find something comperable...)
-the contest will be judged both on the beat on condition of the bait, and the quality of the story...so get to writin!
-contest will run til May 1st...gives everyone time to get pics taken if they so desire!

Here's my example...
It was a mid September day, Stubby (the tail-less Bull Dawg) had already taken to low 30s fish...it was mine and Boro's first real day dedicated to pursuing open water casting and we'd seen a bunch of follows from fish in the lower 30s range in addition to the 2 we had boated. Then come the afternoon the shad started popping all around us...to the left, to the right, front and back, they were everywhere. Shad popping, and muskies rolling on them, scarfing up free meals all around us! The water temps were around 49 degrees, so our ideas ranged from dawgs to big jakes to suicks. We'd cast right at a boil, or where we'd seen a shad pop, casting our arms off, but nothing would eat....and as the shad got more nutty, we weren't even able to get the fish to follow. Having exhausted all the choices in the arsenal (20 different baits thrown in a half hour isn't easy mind you) I turned to the jackpot, thrown in the box only as an after thought being that the water was under "traditional" topwater range.
First cast, a long bomb almost down to the spool, a few violent pops and a big explsion on the bait...I set the hook BEFORE feeling the weight of the fish, only to pop the bait 10 ft across the water. A dozen or so casts later, another missed strike.....a few more and BOOM, the water erupted not 15ft from the boat. This time I gave her a second, then set the hook almost off my feet, a solid hookset finally. She went crazy, head thrashing, throwing water everywhere as she came AT the boat! Unable to get her head down, she attacked Boro, banging her head against the side of the Starcraft at his feet. Back and forth down the boat she fought, til Boro deftly slipped the net under her: 42.5 and nice and girthy.....
See attached pic to view "Crunch N Munch" the true hero of the story! This isn't her only fish, but the best story of a catch for her...yes, she did take on hooked in the butt a year later, but thats another story entirely!

Is that the best (worst) you got Slamr? I will need till this weekend to bring the camera home from work, I will show you several examples why the confidence level is what counts and not the lure color. How long does the contest go on?

I was just gonna say the same thing about Jenkins. I have seen his "clacktales" and they would barely pass for a lure by just looking at them. I cant compete with that!!

My store:

It was a cold and clear night, and I had been sitting there, waiting, watching, wondering. I am not always the patient man, but this time, it was different. I thought with enough patients, she'd come this time. This time I would overcome the obstacles! I would indeed receive my prize for this night was different. This night I wasn't going to sit idle and wait for nothing to come. This night I would get what I wanted because I was more determined than ever. So with this determination, I drove to Gander Mountain and bought my very first musky lure. Can't wait to use it!

Anyone else notice that In-Fisherman usually, if not always, has one particular beat up, solid body, firetiger Believer (Swimwiz?) in the musky stories? It's always there when they have a picture of various musky baits.

I would have to agree with the above posts, I think Scott's clacktails are beyond the most chewed baits I have ever seen.

Definately the only thing on those lures that identifies it as a Crane is the eyes, the exposed thru-wire construction really tells you how much they've been chomped. I vote for Scott.

This is a bait I made in about 1981, I think. It is one of the original Dog Turds, in fact the one Jim Bagley named as such due to the fact I used my trailer touch up paint from K-Dee to fix up the bait, and through the years I had brown and black trailers.

This lure has accounted for more fish from 45" to 52" for me than any other except a Creature. I retired it a couple years ago, and tried to give it to my friend, Beav, but he decided it belonged on my mantle. That is where it will reside until I drop over, I guess!
