Posts: 470 | Hey all, Needing to get a few new leaders and wondering if I should just buy or make 'em my self. I normally buy them from the guy who custom makes bucktails at the St. Germain Flea market and I've had good luck with those. I prefer the Flurocarbon leader material as I fish on a lot of real clear lakes. Couple of questions I could use some advice on: What Lb Test do you like to use? I think most of mine are 130-150# What brand of Fluoro do you like? Tied, Crimped, or both? Super Glue, Yes or no? Is there someone who makes them here on Muskiefirst that are good and a good value? Any Input is appreciated, RandalB

Posts: 994 Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I have some love /hate going with Floro leaders. I have had good luck with the ones I have done but we did have one break-dead center on the loop. There is two pressure points, line tie area and the snap area. It is sickning to see the loop busted. I have experimented with some loop sleeves as used in Ocean fishing. The trouble is the weight they add. I use 150#- 250# Floro.

Posts: 833 | I would not go lower than 130#. I like Seaguar. Stealth Tackle is by far the most popular brand. He ties them. IMO, superglue is not a permanent solution, but it is a decent part of the larger process. I use it in my wind-on leaders. I plan to experiment with ETEX on some of my next set of ties as Epoxy seems to do a lot better. 5 Minute Epoxy ties best knot, IMO. I have Epoxy knots going on 3 seasons without issue. Have never had a flouro bite-off.

Posts: 8748 | I've been using Stealth leaders, 130# and 180#. It's easy enough to make them yourself. The reason I do not make them is that you can buy a LOT of leaders for what you'd spend buying everything you'd need to make them. If I were ever to lose a fish to a broken leader that I made myself, I'd be afraid to use my own leaders ever again.

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | I'm a big fan of Stealth leaders. I used to tie all of my own, but now I only use his. Yeah, it's fairly easy to make your own, but dang it if tying leaders isn't one of the most mundane things I can think of doing. I'd rather be tying flies, so I just buy my leaders and then I also have complete faith that they're good to go. Never had a failure with Stealth.
