I've been reading about need ing to have a letter from the non present parent when crossing into Canada. I think if the child has a passport this is not needed, is that right?

Although you may only be asked for the passport, I would recommend getting a notarized letter of consent, as well as, taking the original birth certificate with you. Why take any chances. If you would get checked, it might cause some delay in your trip. Non parents, like grandparents, should get consent from both parents.
Good luck if you chance getting by with just a passport while ignoring what is recommend on several internet sites.

You should also considering getting a notarized medical authorization from the parent in the event an emergency happens.

I was at a hockey tournament in I-Falls when I was 11 or 12 my dad and I walked across to Fort Frances. When we stopped at customs we were questioned for 15 minutes before being allowed to cross. Bring the letter and a copy of birth certificate.

Do you have any reason not to bring a letter? Doesn't seem like a difficult thing to do simply for peace of mind.

As a young kid, I went to Canada with just my mom a couple times each summer for hockey tournaments. She always had a letter from my dad and we never had a problem crossing.

As everyone here has said, bring the letter. I've done this a few times now with our step daughter. Do all of the legwork for your ex so all she has to do is show up to the notary and sign the form. Takes 5-10 minutes max at the notary. But you could spend hours at the border without it. The border agents we've had that we've given the letter to have always commented that they wished more people would take the time to do so, as it saves them and those crossing a bunch of time.

I think they have generic letters you can use on the google. Just fill in the blank and sign.

If you want no problems, get a notarized "Letter of Consent" from the other parent or both parents if you are not the child's parent. I've taken my grandchildren to Canada multiple times. The letter of consent is proof that you are not attempting to cross the border illegally with the child. I always have 3 actual signed and notarized copies with me - one for the entry into Canada, they typically retain a copy, and the other for reentry coming back to the US, they also typically keep a copy. The third is for what ever.........

PS. Also caution the children to not joke with the customs officer's - they should answer all questions truthfully, as the customs officer will typically ask the children direct questions, let the kids answer and don't butt in or attempt to answer for them.

An answer from one of the kids like: "I don't know him" will get you a very long delay at either Canadian or US customs.
