There is no need for a winch when using a TripleD. It was designed to work effortlessly... which means a low gear ratio is not needed to avoid fatigue. In fact, a higher gear ratio reel will actually allow you to work the lure entirely with the reel handle... rather than pumping the rod. That was one of my goals when helping to design the lure. Your set up will work... and actually excel if a SLOW presentation is desired. Good luck.

| To really make the DDD dance, many of us have been using the St. Croix 6'9" H. The 7'6" MH will get the job done as well. Stick with a rod with good backbone to allow the maximum amount of your energy to transfer to the bait, not lost in the rod tip.

Location: IL | Testers have used everything from 6'3 broom sticks with bass reels to 8 ft whip-sticks with Garcia 7000's..... Mono to braided to superline. All have worked out fine. However, I would recomend 6'9 St.Croix heavy with 80 lb Power Pro.
Like Jason said... one of our benchmarks was to have ease of use. We should give special props to Bryan Sirota and Mike Richardson for coming up the unique keel section (fins). Because that is the true key to its easy to use, eratic, kickout, glide action. The DDD is very responsive to any rod or reel movement.

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Maybe I'm weird in this regard, but on slow moving gliders, I like to have the fastest line pick up possible.....I PERSONALLY find that fish will hit a bait like a DDD or slow moving glider on the pause, and I like really long pauses, so I want to have the ability to take up any slack and hit the fish as fast as possible.
I am going to be using a 7'10" Loomis Xheavy with a 6500C4 with 80lb. Spectron for my DDDs, as I do for all jerkbaits. The way I am going to be running the DDD, I consider it to be a jerkbait, not a crank.
My partner (Boro) has a 6500C4 winch, was hoping to use it for big cranks....but he hates it, I hate it, everyone who has touched it hates it. 3.8 is just too slow, my fear is that you will be cranking like a mad man to keep a bait, regardless of how hard it pulls. Just a thought: if it isn't used yet, return it and get a 6500C3, then buy me a DDD with the money you saved on the trade in.

I'm pretty clear on rod & line, but it seems NONE OF YOU have anything positive to say about the 3.8:1 WINCH? I already own two C4-6500's w/6.3:1 gear ratios, two C3-6500's with 5.3:1 gear ratios and regularly throw 2-8 oz. jerkbaits I already own about 30 musky rods and 15 reels. BUT...What kind of crank baits will I use with my new C4-5600 Winch (3.8:1), or is Slamr really correct...I should just send it back???????? |

| I have used a 7 St Croix and a 7 Fenwick on the 3D with very satisfactory results. If I was going to change rods at all,(I'm not)for this bait, I would go slightly stiffer action rather than softer. Your reel is probably better to be sent back and replaced with straight 5600 or whatever you like best, in a faster retrieve model. I have used some slower action models(reels) and have to say I didn't even realize how crappy they were until I changed back to faster retrieves. Your slow gearing would still be fine for trolling and I can think of two baits I would probably be happy with slower reels on and those are the 8" Jake(I think the bait sucks though so I don't use it anymore) and the 10" jake. Both very heavy pullers. Triple D is not that heavy of a puller, and on a straight retrieve you are giving up the bait's best aspects, twitch actions. |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | 0723 - I actually fish slow as can be now, pretty much slower than anyone I know, except maybe Worrall, cause he's just throwing those plastic worms anyways. Slow was my key to early season success last year, and also my downfall in the summer, I never sped up! I still owe you a beer for the words of wisdom that led to me catching a few more fish last year!
I use a 6500C4 for all jerks, and just reel fast to catch up with slack line, but then pause deathly long before jerking again.
