Hey everyone,
I am new to the site and relatively new to musky fishing. I have been fishing for them for about 3 or 4 years off and on, but now I have my own boat and I am able to get on the water much more. I was just wondering if any of you guys fish the New River for Muskies and would be willing to give me some tips and pointers. The best success I have had is live bait fishing with red eyes. Just trying to up my skill level a little.
Thanks
Justin

I also fish the new river, caught my largest to date a 50 incher 38 pounder from their in 2006 lots of big fish in the new. I fish a lot of suicks and different glider jerkbaits, I also fish a lot of bucktail spinners and some topwaters. I fish the lower new below claytor dam, do you fish upper or lower? also im not sure it is legal to use redeyes as bait.

I do most of my fishing right below the dam, in the Radford area. Red eyes are legal because they are not considered a game fish. I have seen many big fish in the stretch from Bissett Park to the River Course and had several hook ups but have yet to catch one there.

Try the McCoy Falls/ Belspring areas...a stout cane pole rigged w/ 50lb Shakespeare floro & a Roberts Mud Puppy will provide action dusk to dawn, fished from a mango kayak...now I must rest...
***Visine will combat those red eyes...get more sleep...

redeyes are considered a Game Fish according to the Virginia department of game and inland fisheries along with all other sunfish species such as large and smallmouth bass, spotted bass, bream and bluegill. Virginia does have a state record for redeyes which is 22 pounds 2 oz caught in laurel bed lake on 5/17/86
