Subject: Musky under the boat.

What's the best way to bring a fish back, when it goes under the boat?
Lost a big girl tonight, trying to force the issue back to my side of the boat. What's the best way to do it, when you don't have the time to go front or back of the boat.

free spool and try to wait out the power run...if need be dip your rod under the trolling motor or around the back of the big motor and switch sides of the boat while freespooling

Don't try to Horse it,..... Free spool and keep the pressure on ,,, untill you RE-Gain control over her.

give yourself some slack cut the line then run to the other side of the boat and see if you can grab it. now re-tie, piece of cake.! or have your buddy stick his face in the water on the other side of the boat, slapping the top of the water with both hands, like messinkomer does with his rod instead of a figure 8. ...get your camera ready !

Stick rod deep in water and carry on playing it taking care not to go round prop on engines.. Do this all the time with 4 to 8 static rods out and two anchor ropes in there as well.. More FUN that way

Last decent musky I caught went under the boat twice. New longer rods make it much easier to stab the rod in the water and bring the line around the bow or stern while keeping below the motors. Part of the challenge.

(Landed the fish BTW.)

BINGO!!!!

Go AROUND with the fish!! No reason to let the boat get in the way. Even if you have a small 14 footer with bench seats, you can still go around. As stated...dip the rod in the water, pull a little line out by hand if needed, and go around and allow the fish to be played without a boat in between.

OR...if you have trolling motor going, and you are confident enough to position the boat while playing a fish, adjust the boat. (I prefer not to do this unless there are two people in the boat so one can play the fish, the other can adjust the boat position) Doing this alone adds one more variable to the equation when playing the fish, thus more room for error in the fight. a second person can adjust as needed, but in most cases, going around the bow or stern (obviously being careful of the lower unit) gets you to a more advantageous position.

Thanks guy for the information. I always have the thumb button pressed when I have a follow going into a figure 8. And totally brain farted when the fish hit out from the boat and charged under.
You never learn what your doing wrong til you lose!

I'd be careful on thumbing. It it HIGHLY effective if you can maintain positive pressure. I'm a younger guy so I prefer to drop to my knees while putting the rod in the water. I want that rod to do its job! If your a multi-tasker you can swing the boat with the trolling motor too...but in the heat of battle its hard to even think haha.

I've had fish fly out from under the boat too. What a thrill! Your right about learning the hard way....only way I seem to learn!
