| I bought a berkley leader making kit for like $10 bucks last fall. It came with a cheap crimper and some 45# nylon wire and some number 3 sleeves. I began making my own leaders and actually caught a 42 inch 20+ pound musky on one of my home made quick set rigs. I was estatic! So I bought some 60# and 80# nylon leader wire and some number 4 sleeves. The other day I did a test in my garage with the 60# and 80# quick set rigs and they both slipped pretty bad. It seems like the nylon wire slips or my crimps are too weak? Do I need a real hand swager? I have been reading on the leadertec website and they say that round sleeves are for very light tackle. Do I need oval sleeves or double barrel sleeves? I have really enjoyed making my own leaders and I want to take it to the next level. I don't ever want one of my own leaders to break or slip on the water. Any expert tips or advice on what tools will do the job? I would like to make some pretty stout leaders. Thank you and keep safe this fall. | |||

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | I use 135# non-nylon 7strand for bucktail leaders and sucker rigs. I don't see any benefit for going lighter than that. I double crimp the leaders just to be safe and there is no slippage whatsoever. Also, I crimp the tag end as hard as possible with a vise grip and the slightly lighter everywhere else so that the crimp isn't cutting into the wire. I've also seen guys make a loose knot and then crimp the tag end.

Posts: 2325 Location: SE, WI. | For Me , I would NEVER-EVER crimp any leader. Crimps will fail. Buchers 7 strand leaders never had crimps. Tie a knot like they do. I have never had a knot fail on a 7 strand leader. If you would log in, I could tell you how to tie one, or show you ...;-) Also; another leader material you could use is twist weld. They use this stuff on sharks in the ocean. I ' ve had very good results with this stuff also and easy to use.

Location: Hayward WI | Here's a short video I made with the "knot" I use on 7-strand. Only mistake was where I say I wrap it 6-8 inches around the main end, should have said 6-8 wraps. I don't know how to get the video on the message, so here's the link. http://video.outdoorsfirst.com/f527d073962680117a00f999f9c60edc.360...

| nylon leader material should be tied, not crimped. tie a simple fishing knot, cinch it tight, then slightly melt the nylon with a lighter to hold the knot. great for QS rigs. | |||
