I see that the new Ocea Jigger 2001 NR-HG (Japan's version of a Trinidad in Lefty) does not come with a centrifugal brake (reduces backlash) like the Trinidad does as it is primarily used for jig fishing.

Anyone have experience using reels without centrifugal brakes? Are they difficult to cast? Which reels don't have them? Thanks for the help.

The Saltist doesn't have centrifugal or magnetic braking and does just fine. Really have to pay attention to the spool tension and spool control with your thumb.

Thanks for the replies, even yours Doc. I wish I would have tried your Avet more last summer. I have heard nothing but good things about the Saltist so that makes me feel better about the brake. Thanks again.

Some of the Avet's can be ordered with the MC option. My JX 6.0:1 doesn't have it an from what I can tell can't be added. There's info on custom "magging" the reel on Charkbait. This is what I plan to do.

The Trinidad A's don't have a braking system either, so I would imagine they're very similar. Probably the same reel.

on all reels like the Trinidad and Saltist that have no spool / certrifugal brakes just pack the spool bearings with a good corrosion waterproof grease and keep the cast control knob firm, not tight so the line will fall slow with a 3-4oz bait and use your thumb. Also use a rod with a soft tip that will help with casting into the wind with lighter bucktails.

Does using heavier/larger dia. line (like 100 lb braid) help at all ?

It helps because the thicker the line it won't dig in the spool and cause backlashes on the next cast. Always try to keep the line as tight as U can on the spool, at the end of the day when you are runnig back to the docks at speed in the boat let all your line out in the water and rewind it as tight as U can get it on the spool for the next day of casting.
