Saw this at Gander the other day, seen them referred to as Magnum Hook Cutters or Heavy Duty Hook Cutters; wondered if anyone has used these and if they're a decent (cheaper) alternative to a Knipex?

Here's the cheaper alternative to the knipex that I use.

I bought a pair of the Rapala ones you are considering from Gander last year. I got them home and proceeded to cut a couple hooks just to test and was not impressed. They cut relatively easily, but each cut dug a groove into the blade of the cutters. Clearly not strong enough for musky hooks. I took them back to Gander the next day and ordered a pair of Knipex form R&H.

I also bought a pair of the Rapala cutters with the same poor results as Jeff. I have also tried the pair that look like the one from habor freight that I bought from Manards, Also with very poor results. I then broke down and got a pair of Knipex and I will stick with them. For cutting the real heavy hook shanks I got the Knipex nail head cutters they work real well..When it comes down to saving a nice fish, a few extra bucks is worth it to me.

Yup! So true but not only for the fish but for you too.

Wait till you hook yourself in your dominant arm and have to use the hook cutters, again you'll be glad you spent the few extra bucks on the knipex. Try and one hand a set of cheap bolt cutters and then try to do it with your least dominant hand, good luck. Buy some Knipex plain and simple.

Thanks for the input guys. I kinda figured if they were just as good I'd have heard of more people using them, good to have it confirmed before throwing away $30.

Sorry for such a late response but DON'T buy the Rapala's they are HORRIBLE! Cheaply made and broke after first use.
Knipex are the way to go and worth the extra money.

I spent the extra on the Knipex. Rather do it right once than spend more in the long run!
