not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes. I am going to ontario and wondering what to do about my iphone. i have at&t and need to get calls/emails, but the int'l service is crazy. 79 cents a min. crazy expensive data. any thoughts. do the phones even work there anyway? better to get a phone there and call mine? i'll be near dryden/ vermillion bay and then sioux lookout. any thoughts/ advice appreciated.

I "enjoy" Verizon service, so this may be apples to oranges, but I was able to add Canadian service to my package for $20 per month.  Doing so meant my package rates applied.  I was then able to take that additional service away upon my return.  Does AT&T offer any comparable plan?

As far as service, it was spotty in Canada.  Worked sometimes in my cabin at AML, worked always on the AML dock, worked well in Vermilion Bay, but only sometimes worked in Dryden.

from what i gathered calling att i have to turn on intl roaming. which is free. then i can use in canada for 79 cents a min. for $5 a month i can get a canada pkg which lowers it to 59 cents a min. texts are free coming in 50 cents going out. i think i would just shut off my internet stuff as the plan is too much for not enough. i guess it is roaming via bell canada network

Another possibility, if wireless internet is available is to look into skype/ipevo phone.

i have skype. i think that might be a good idea. could leave my phone on airplane mode. i found out that if u get an incoming normal phone call (at&t)and u hit ignore or miss the call you are still charged because it had to activate an intl network. this is the case for up to a half hour after u turn your phone off with at&t anyway. just fyi for anyone else reading this forum.

My son travels to Argentina frequently. He uses an IPhone and Skype to get all his messages and calls. He just finds a hotel, cafe or anyplace else he can get a signal and calls away. Calls from Skype to Argentina are just 2.1 cents/minute when calling to a landline or cell phone. Free to another Skype user. I live on LOTW 4 months per year and use Skype to make all my calls. It works great. I am ATT and my phone will not work here, even with the additional $20/month package.

I did a Canadian phone for our travels up there. I was just looking into Verizon's package also but there are limitations.. Not sure there is a great fix in place yet.

My experience is that cell coverage is spotty at best in Ontario. I rent a satellite phone from http://www.outfittersatellite.com primarily for safety reasons. It is expensive, but generally I can place a call.

Mine (US Cellular) worked in Minaki last year, although it was a bit of a shock when I got home to a $155 bill. $.99/min FTL.
