How many of you musky nuts have families who like tubing? We bought a tube last year and had a blast on it. We haven’t done any of that high speed whipping around yet. In fact, I don’t think we’ve had the tube on plane yet. Every time we get the tube going faster it seems to plow water. Should we just go for it and hold on and eventually it will pop up? How much air pressure should be in the tube? Maybe it would help if I had it stiffer. It’s a decent tube; it’s the kind that has a thick nylon shell that fits over the inner tube.

Lean back on the tub pulling up on the handles any you'll plane w/o problems. The only problem comes when the driver throws the rider into the "spirol of death." [:0] [:0] [:0] [:knockout:]

Dude,
Fill that motherf@#$% hard as a rock, and use a 100ft. rope. You whip cirlces and scare the bejesus out of the dude on the tube. We had a guy whippin so fast around the corner wheh he fell off the tube he skipped across the lake on his back! Went over to pick him up and his lifejacket had all the stuffing blew outta it!

I used to use my rig as the tow boat for the International Tubing Championships in the Carlos/Darling chain of lakes in Alexandria, Minnesota. It was a tongue in cheek title, but drew about 60 contestants.

When one takes the tube into a tight corner, the tube can reach speeds of three times that of the boat, and SEVERE injury can result if the rider wipes out.

My job was to dump the rider as quickly as possible, which usually took less than 35 seconds. Many lost their swimming suit. The ladies learned to NEVER wear a two piece, and wear a pro ski vest to make sure they didn't moon the crowd on the way past in the first turn.[]

Haha STeve that is halarous. I have been tubing on the mississippi and It is a blast. What you want to do is get going straight pretty fast (40 - 50 not to much faster) and then slow down quite a bit and start to make circles don't make them to small or to big but just do that fairly slow. The waves build up after a while. They think oh this is no big deal we are going as slow as heck then when they see a 5 foot wave coming they are screwd! lol its a blast. Make sure one thing If you think you got to bail you better bail or you can get hurt badly. It wouldn't be fun going over that 5 foot wave with your tube upside down and you still on it. If you thinik the tube is turning upside down jump off it. I usally end up doing backflips off it on accident then water shoots up my nose. When you get into it more you can get the double tubes and stuff thats fun because when the other person isn't looking you can push them off and you got the tube to yourself:) Have fun

Oh I forgot one very very impotant detail. Put your weight back and lean back before taking off. Not to the point your about to fall off backwards just so you don't go underneath when the person puts into FWD.

We used to go nuts tubing as teens. My swim trunks sunk one time. You can get really hurt skipping along after a bad/fast wipeout, mostly because the force of the water bends your body parts in unusual positions. Remember how you can skip even a round rock if you throw it hard and low? People are the just the same, but we have appendages.

No problem for your family if you just take it kinda easy, though.

Being a musky fisherman, I see pleasureboating as a sacreligeous act. I toss baits at these people. Tubing may be fun but do it on a lake that does not have musky in it.[;)]

The directions (yes, I read directions and even ask them when lost!) that came with our tube said to fill it with air to 80% of its capacity. This allows for the weight of the rider and heat from air and friction to bring the tube to optimum fill without a blow-out. We took Jon and his buddy Ian out for the first time on the Ohio River two nights ago. What a blast they had.
Yes, I also had qualms about using a perfectly good bassboat (go ahead and snicker! It's not a Tuffy, I know) for such recreational uses, but well worth it to see the smiles on those kids' faces.
I got up to plane as quick as I could then backed down. Planing was a bit sluggish, like towing a big bait. Trim set a bit lower, too, for better control. Once up, they figured out how to lean to steer across wake. Eye-burn from flying water seemed to be a factor. Getting a boat ladder is next on my list. Be safe! m[]
