| Just wondered whats the best way to balance your rod with these weight systems. is there a specific point on where you should try to balance out your rod?? have a few ideas, just wanted to hear others thanks Dave | |||

Posts: 32957 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | After Beav talked me into the Bass Pro balancers, I balance every muskie rod I own. Easier on the hands, arms, and wrists, and a better hookset, too. I balance them to be about zero with the average weight of the lure I am going to throw. Add in resistance to the equation, and you will be right on. A double ten spinnerbait, for example, will require more balancer weights than a willow leaf of the same weight. I ran out of balancers before a trip last year and black taped a few lead pieces from tire weights I trimmed up onto the rod butt, and got the same effect. Not as pretty, but worked perfectly.

| Ok, but where is the center of balance, or balance point then? at the reel? above the reel, where you hold the rod? thats what im not sure about thanks again Dave | |||

Posts: 646 Location: In a shack in the woods | I balanced it at the trigger with my finger. Fully spooled reel and set up with a leader dangling from the tip. Probably the wrong way though. I just guessed when I did it. LOL probably why I didn't like it.

| I would think if you are the type that hold it at the foregrip you're balancing point might be a bit more forward..those that palm the reel like me would be at the reel...it doesn't have to be at all perfectly balanced to make a world of difference...most of the guys who I have showed this too have done it to all their rods..there are still a couple that don't seem to think it matters...they are nuts in my book! try it for a day and you'll never go back ... | |||

Posts: 443 Location: Indiana | Anybody have any tricks for doing this on rods with fat cork? I don't believe the commercial balancers fit.

| yes, take a knife and cut into the cork about 1/2 an inch all the way around ...then cut the other way up to the cut...put rod balancer over it and wrap with electrical tape...I have done it to all mine with "fat cork" | |||
