Subject: pounder or giant rubber rod

i am looking to purchase a rod to only throw big rubber on like pounders. I have thrown the bulldog rods and don't like them. I hooked one fish on the heaviest one and ripped the hooks out at the boat when it made a final serge. I have heard the hammernick rods mentioned as well as a couple others but i want your opinions. Theres a St.Croix that i have heard about also but not sure of the model number and also the okuma's. If you could by one rod, what would you buy. time is important as ice is coming.

I use a 9' St. Croix Legend built by Keith at ProEdge w/ a Penn 975. The rod is stiff for casting and quick, hard hook sets, but the tip has good feeling and flexibility when fighting a fish. I toss Pounders A LOT and have used a few other rods, but this one is by far the best and takes the work out of casting. Be smart and let the equipment work harder while you enjoy fishing. If interested, I suggest you contact him direct.

I build a pounder rod on a saltwater blank. I built one for Steve Jonesi and watched him snap cast pounders like they were bucktails. It's a one piece blank that has a powerful graphite butt section and it transitions to fiberglass for the tip. This makes the tip softer for fighting the fish and it really launches the big rubber baits. The best blank I have come across for pounders and it is less expensive than the St. Croix Legends.

I built one for myself that has not been used that much. Pounders are not part of my arsenal. If you are interested drop me an email with your contact info and we can talk.

I have never thrown a pounder on the Okuma XH, but I have thrown 11 inch sues, which is relatively close to a pounder. Maybe Mark will chime in and add some company insight.

Grudge,

The XH will toss the Pounder like a dream. Best rod I have ever used for casting the Pounder. You can wing that sucker!! That said, the action on the rod leaves a little to be desired for actually fishing the bait. The rod loads a little too easy for my liking...making really ripping baits a little bit of a challenge and tiring.

I stand corrected. What is the weight difference between a pounder, and a 11 inch sue?

The 11” Curly Sue has a very similar profile to the pounder; the tail length is the same. The main difference is the weight; I wanted a big plastic bait that was lighter than the competition. The 11” Curly Sue is 12oz which I think is good for a bait of this size. On a side note the 9” Curly Sue is just a tiny bit smaller than a mag dawg (same size tail), but my bait only weighs 5oz.

i snapped the heaviest Okuma rod on the 2nd cast i made w/ a pounder, not built for the big stuff, my 2 cents

I would consider that a defective blank as I've put mine through the ringer with Pounders and Shack Attacks biggest baits without a hiccup
