Posts: 42 Location: Becker MN | Hi all, fairly new to painting baits. I got an airbrush as a christmas gift and some lure blanks (plastic). I primed them with some simple can primer, and then painted with createx water based paints. What I am asking for help with is what can I clear coat them with....not looking for anything that will withstand a gunshot but something that will do a good job of protecting the paint. I don't have a rotating dryer like some I've seen on here, and I really don't understand what you all are doing with some of that. Guess I need something fairly simple Thanks

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | If you just having fun and want to try something easy goto your local hardware store and buy a small two part epoxy kit. 4-8 oz should do fine for a few lures. I just put on rubber gloves and mix, then dowse epoxy on the lures, hang and run a torch across it to blow off the bubbles. Works great but don't burn them. Your breath will work to for breaking the bubbles. Next day do it again adn hang the lures from the otehr end.

Posts: 55 Location: SW Michigan | Personally, I just make a few lures every year for myself. I use Devcon 2 Ton Epoxy, pretty good working time. And a pair of vice grips & just turn it by hand for 15 minutes or so, 2 or 3 rev.'s per minute. Acid brush works well & fairly cheap. One coat might be enough with plastics. But I usually coat mine again 24 hours or less normally. 2-3 coats. Pretty simple. Edited by toothn'nail 3/26/2008 9:10 PM

Posts: 42 Location: Becker MN | On the epoxy's does it affect the bait action in the water? The baits I painted were some Jakes we got from Thorne bros

Posts: 55 Location: SW Michigan | The extra weight (plastic) won't affect the action on Jakes. BTW If you get any flaws you can lightly sand the next day, wipe clean & re-coat. One time I dropped the newly coated lure on the carpet. After my initial melt down I picked out the carpet fibers grabbed the wife's hair drier & smoothed everything out as much as possible. Sanded the next day & re-coated. You couldn't even tell.

| When I build some new one and want to test right away, before I use the 2 part stuff, I'm impressed with Envirotex spray. A few light coats 3or4 and your done. Hold up well too. Shine pretty good as well Most Ace hardware stores have the 2 part mix but will order the spray. If the proto works then I'll go 2 part and put them on the drum. Posts: 55 Location: SW Michigan | She wasn't home (thank goodness) and I was able to clean it up before she got back. What mama don't know can't hurt me! Ha! | ||

Posts: 3 | How does Envirotex hold up to hooks and teeth? I have had a bit of an issue with that stuff in the past. I've found that once it gets a puncture in it, it kind of sheets off the lure, and takes the paint with it, what did I do wrong, cuz I've heard alot of good stuff about Envirotex.
