Suppose it was you that got a 50 pounder in WI...

What do you do now? (Not with the fish, but with yourself.) Do you think catching a fish like that might take something away from trying to catch the big one, now that you actually caught it?

Maybe its me, but I like the idea of knowing I can get out there next year and beat my personal best. If I got a 50 pounder in WI, I could pretty much say "that's it, that's the biggest fish I'm probably ever going to catch in WI"

Do you go for numbers then? Fish in another state? Only fish in Canada and try for a 60 pounder? Take up golf?

Or try to get another one

Having been fortunate enough to catch and release a 50 lber + last year I asked myself the same question many times over the course of the off season. So what did I do this season? Set my goal on a larger fish of course. I didn't catch it but I did spend way more time on the water and boated way more fish this season. Every outing was sweet. You know it's not catching a monster that drives alot of us but just being on the water with friends and trying to figure out the bite that keeps me going out. 50 lbers are just a bonus...

I got my 50# fish in 1995. Yes, that effected my desire for awhile, but the fire rekindled and I want another.

It would be a nice problem to have.

I love musky fishing, catching a 50lber would just make me love it even more. My wife wouldn't like but my love for big fat girls would increase.

If I caught it inland, I'd just spend more time on the Bay to get another WI 50(though I spend too much time there already so says wife..). I'll tell you when it happens.

I know myself too well. I think it would diminish my musky fever a lot. I would probably be in a prolonged funk where my desire to fish would be in question. Not only would I be in an indefinite period of awe, I am goal driven and I'm sure there would be a long period of me asking myself "how can I top THAT?!?!?!" or "why bother?"

However, as much as the above point is true, I'd hope I eventually realize that that is not what musky fishing HAS to be about. Hopefully I would not be so jaded that it ruins the musky fever forever.

Maybe I'd try traveling to new waters outside WI and learn as much about them as possible, perhaps go on a hunt for the small lakes (< 200 acre type water) worth fishing in different regions.........I don't know for sure.

All of us can only keep hoping that a "problem" like this would happen to us. For those of you who "suffer" from catching a 50lb. + musky, I feel very sorry for you!!!...Just kidding, congratulations and I'm sure you deserve it.
I don't think it would be much of a different situation if I got a 50 lb.'er ever in my life as far as fishing afterwards. I recently caught my first 50"+ fish on LOTW this past summer as my first fish of the year and I was lucky enough to do it in my first 3 years of musky fishing. Throughout the rest of the summer, I knew that my chances of getting one bigger than that were very slim, but that picture of a huge fish following my bait to the boat sticks in my head and will never get out no matter what I catch (or don't catch for that matter).
My girlfriend often wonders how I can go fishing so much, and many times not even catch a fish, but still have fun doing it and going back out the next day. What blows her mind even more is when I tell her that I saw one or two fish for the whole day and I still consider it a "good" day even though none were in the boat. It's not only the search for the big fish ( although that is a large part), but rather a way to spend time with my dad and friends, being more of a memory-maker than an adventure.
I once told my mom I could go fishing everyday and would enjoy it more every day and she told me that I wouldn't, well two years later I'm trying to make that dream come true by looking for an oppurtunity to start guiding. Whether this will happen or not, I do not know....but one thing I do know is that nothing will keep me off the water fishing with my dad and friends for as long as I can.

If I caught a 50 pounder, it wouldn't change much. I would still go musky fishing with the same mindset. The next fish, regardless of size would still mean the same as it would have before the 50#er. I just enjoy fishing for these things.
I broke the 50" mark a few years ago, I thought I might fish less then...but in the long run it only made me want to fish more but not necessary for a new personal best. I figure, I make fishing decisions to increase the odds of me catching a bigger fish and after that, what happens...happens. I certainly wouldn't be moving to Georgian Bay to obsesively try to beat it.

If I caught a new world record, I would still feel the same about any catch after that. I wouldn't fish any less, maybe it would be financially beneficial and would allow me to afford to fish more, now that would be cool.

One thing is for sure though, I would need a designated driver the night of a 50# or even a 50"+ musky.

I'm surprised any of you have said that it would decrease the drive to fish. I think it would make me want another one! Sure, maybe you couldn't expect to catch another like it, but you could still set numbers goals, or even still size goals, etc. When I go fishing, I don't feel like I have to top anything for it to be a good year. If I catch more an bigger fish this year that would be great, and I am expecting to, but I won't quit if I don't keep outdoing myself.

I will let you know for sure if I ever do catch a 50 pounder. Heck, you guys will know if I catch a 30 pounder!

The wife and I did the numbers thing this year. three 30 pounders over 51 inches and 223 muskies over 30 inches. I dont want to ever fish that many days again on numbers lakes. Now we are looking to big water only in search of those elusive 40 to 60 lb critters. If I ever catch a super Tanker Musky over 50 lbs Ill get a replica and start looking for a true 30 to 40 lb Northern Pike. After that Ill try Gator Gars. But I sure like a bucket of fat perch . As I get older good food starts to call to me. Kingfisher
