Hello,
have just started topwaterfishing using Zara spook and Super spook for pike and perch. The lures have a tendency to go below the surface, could this depend on the length of the leader? I’m using Surflone micro supreme 26Ib leader, which I tie straight to the lure. My leaders are about 10in long.

I'm not familiar with the type of leader you're using, but I do know the bass topwater lures are not really meant to be used with a leader, they have a tendency to make them sink. I do know that there are some light leaders made that can be worked with those lures, but the only one I've found so far is made by an individual. There are some good smaller musky sized topwater lures that would work well for your needs, the Dancin' Raider and the Viper by Phantom. They're a little bigger than a Super Spook but on the smallish size for a musky lure. Never heard of topwater fishing for perch?

I agree with Rockin' SV. Why are you using a leader with a zara spook? Those baits work better without one. So you risk bite offs? Isn't that worth the price to have the proper action? If you feel you must use a leader, try using one no longer that 5" & should work very well for you. Also you are correct in using no snaps/swivels and tying direct to the bait. If I am using a jackpot, I never use a snap or swivel (only a split ring to the bait). These baits are designed to be nose up in the water and placing hardware on the nose will impede their action. This is not what you want.

I'd like to know what kind of structure you are catching those perch over?

I absolutely believe in using a leader, but those particular lures are not going to work well with a leader. Another option worth considering if you are stuck on using those lures might be a fluorocarbon line leader.

you should always use a leader. and not a spook unless your using a florocarbon leader with it.. just my 2 cents.......bill

I use a short leader, that I make from the 15lbs berkley spool. I catch alot of perch with that. I use a small swivel and a smal snaplock of some kind, to minimize the weight. I also fish them "bare" but I cant say that they work better. I even use the Super Spook junior with a leader, with no problems.

You could also try TyGer leaders:

Opps. I think "Surflone micro supreme" and "TyGer" may be the same thing.
