Posts: 425 Location: Elkhart, IN | Does anybody here have alot of luck with spinnerbaits? If so do you have any luck triggering the muskies away from the boat? Here's my situation, I see about as many muskies on spinnerbaits as anything else, and I've now caught a few on them. My problem is I've only caught on the figure 8, I can't seem to trigger them away from the boat. They've kinda became a confidence bait because of how many fish I see, but a source of frustration since it seems there's a hit on the 8 or nothing. I've tried directional changes on the retrieve and some pumping of the rod. Any suggestions? What's your experience, is this normal?

| Like Jimmy Houston used to say...."You gotta bump the stump." I make sure to let my spinnerbaits make contact with something on the retrieve. Weeds, reeds, rocks, wood.....anything. Make it ricochette off of something. I'll work them over weeds, and then slow them down util they hit the weeds and then I'll rip them free. Try varying your retrieve speeds and if you use single bladed models, work them around or over things and the just kill it and let it flutter. They hit it like a jig. | |||

Posts: 2024 | Sometimes I'll throw the bait on shore and rip it off. Occasionally they hit on the rip. Any change in speed probably can't hurt. I typically pump my spinnerbaits in, or straight retrieve for most of it with a few pumps toward the end of the cast. Just my .02 cents

| Around here, they use 2oz+. Spinnerbaits, and burn them right under the surface. They even speed up the lure during a follow. I think they troll them around 7mph too. I have caught all my Minnesota Muskies on Spinnerbaits away from the boat, and have only caught fish in a figure 8 on Spinnerbaits at LOTW. Good Luck. By the way, the heavy model Rad Dogs rule in my area. | |||

Posts: 929 Location: Rhinelander. | sweep your rod tip side to side during retrieve. The longer the rod the more change in direction you'll get. Vary the speed od your swep also. sometimes they like it fast and other times slower. Pfeiff

Posts: 696 Location: Northern Illinois | Its also a very good bait to cover a lot of area with. If you have a lot of spots to hit this is a good bait to do it with because you can run and gun a spot or spots. Early in the season they are very good in almost all sizes.

Posts: 617 Location: Clintonville, WI | Rockin', Good suggestions by all. However, I'll give you a different perspective......don't get frustrated, relish in your boatside spinner "trend". Take advantage of it. Guys like jlong live for that kind of rush i.e. would think your trend is not a problem at all.

Posts: 425 Location: Elkhart, IN | Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll give them a try. And yes I do enjoy the ones that do go at boatside, just looking to up my catch percentages on followers.
