For those of you who have used these....what do you think?

Who makes these reels for Gander? What are the gear ratios on them? Does the high speed reel have problems with the gears when burning bucktails?

The Gander baitcasters are pretty solid reels. You'll hear reports on both sides, just like with anything. But for the money, they're pretty dependable. High speed reels aren't for burning bucktails, no matter which reel it is. If you use it for that purpose you're going to burn the gears out in a big hurry. Their standard reel is better equipped to fish muskies at 5.3:1 or 5.2:1. The high speed reels wouldn't be bad for jerkbaits. But my recommendation would be the standard one for 90% of most people's uses.

i have a couple of the lower geared silver ones(5.3:1) like awh said for the money you cant beat them, especially since i got mine for 40% off. i probablly got a bout a dozen fish on one last year with size up to 47" and they held up fine! the nice hting about those gander reels as well as the bass pro ones, if you do have a problem simply bring it back and they usally replace them with no questions asked. the high speed ones (gold) i know some people who have burned them up id stay away from those.

They are made by Pfluger for Gander. They are just a Trion with a Gander label. I have a Trion and has been a good reel so far. I use 7000's 90% of the time though.(I have 5) The 7000 series are the best reel for burning bucktails and anything else that pulls hard. You just can't kill'em. The ALL TIME BEST muskie reel ever made. Jason Bovee

I have a half dozen Plueger Trion's which have served me well for the last 4 years. I clean and lubricate them regularly and they have performed flawlessly. I fish approx. 200 days per year in fresh and saltwater and have never had a failure. The Gander reel and the Plueger are the same from what I understand.

I have switched completely over to the GS-66's. I like them quite a bit better than the Abu 6500 c3's I used to use. IMO the Gander reels have a smoother retrieve and smoother drag over the Abu 6500's. We'll see at the end of the season how durable they end up being, but from what I have been told by others and have started to experience myself, they are a hidden gem in the under $100 price range. I just got tired of the side button release on the 6500's and the bait clicker switch that would slide around if I palmed the reels. The Gander reels have been a perfect replacement for me. And as John stated, it's nice to just be able to run over to the local Gander Mountain and exchange a reel if you do ever have a problem.

There's two differnent models of the 56 and 66....low speed (silver) and high speed (gold). Yes, they're made by Pflueger. I've had both of the 56's. and think there just about every application that can be done with the low speed...maybe it's just me, but I don't trust any highspeed retrieve reel anymore. The Pfluegers are 5 ball bearings...the GS are 6.
