Posts: 21 | Can a person fish topwater effectivly on opening weekend? What factors affect this? Should the lures big big and noisy or smaller and quieter? The reason I ask, a relative from cali is coming in for the wis muskie opener, and I have been given the task of playing guide. This relative loves to fish topwater. As a matter of fact it is downright difficult to get him to fish with anything else, no matter what the weather or time of year. Last year we fished minn pike opener on a lake with no muskies in it and he threw a 7'' Woodchopper all day. Amazinly enough he did produce one massive swirl in a tiny 100 acre farm lake. How can I keep the topwater fanatic happy and still try and get him into a fish or two? Water's soft already!! Lonewolf

| Topwater is great spring time...I prefer walk the dog types, but they will work as well as any other lure opening day...Ben | |||

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Topwater will definitely work in the spring. We have had fish up already on Weagles and the temps are only 46. We had a guy in our MI chapter that boated 3 fish opening week in So Wisconsin on topraiders, so they willlll eat them.

| Topwaters work anytime of year, and early on I like the smaller ones like Undertakers, Vipers, and Baby Weagles Pacemakers and Topraiders also work well early along with Boogerman Buzz Baits | |||

Location: The Yahara Chain | Toppers are excellent in the cold water....underutilized by most fisherman.

Posts: 2091 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Definately works, I caught a fish and had a few other blow ups on the WI southern opener last year. The water temps were in the low 40's. I always start throwing topwater, especially Topraiders and Pacemakers from the opener on.

| My brother has been killing me for two years using Buzzbaits on the Bass opener. No reason for it to not work on Muskies. Also, using a Topwalker, I caught a 40" Muskie on the opener three years ago. I suppose it depends on the conditions. Good luck. Edited by Derrys 4/7/2006 7:32 PM | |||

| I usually have a Stillwater welded on one of the rods right at opener. It helps to have a warm spring, but even in cold water they will sometimes hit it. Ty | |||
