Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Redgut is never easy, and may be pretty tough in September due to turnover. The pike fishing will be fantastic in Bleak abd the surrounding area, as will the smallmouth bite. |

How would you rate Red Gut on Rainy if compared to LOTW and some of the other waters you fish up there? I liked the area, and caught some fish, but had to work pretty hard to see fish. Those I saw, I generally saw hit. I liked fishing there because of the really great big pike fishing and it HAS been nearly 12 years now, long enough for things to change alot.
Also, have you ever seen or caught a Muskie in Bleak? |

| My experience on Rainy Lake is pretty much limited to Red Gut Bay. I always thought it was a miniature LOTWs.
Spots in general are very close together, and at times many will produce fish action. I liked it in Sept as opposed
to the LOTWs as there wasn't the algae bloom we sometimes have on the big lake. Fish size seems pretty good,
biggest I've had on was around 48" or so (the #*^@ thing got away on a spectactular leap), but probably average
around 40" or so on fish caught.
In general the size of fish I've seen on Red Gut compares to what I've seen on most Canadian Shield lakes, but
without quite as many real big ones. There is an occasional 40 lb fish caught, and a fair number of fish 48" and bigger.
I think it would be a good place to get your feet wet if you are just starting to fish Canadian Shield lakes as it's not
as intimidating as LOTWs, Eagle, Lac Seul, or Wabigoon. There are some real big smallies in there also. It's a fun place
to fish.

| There are no muskies left in Rainy. They all swam to LOTW's through the river..

Red Gut will treat you fine in Sept. There are good fish in other parts of the lake too. Upper Red Gut, Lower Red Gut, Swell, Seine River, Seine Bay and the south arm including Bleak, and even a few kickers in Rice Bay. The north arm does not contain any fishable populations of musky though.
Dougs, right. The rocks are a good place to start. Fish the wind like elsewhere. A few fifty pounders were caught fishing speciifc wind patterns on the rocks over the years. Maybe some you remember the two fish caught in the eighties in early Oct. that were the largest entered in the Infisherman kill pages. I think the largest was right around 49 pounds. Those fish were caught on the rocks in a stiff wind.
This of course does not mean to avoid the weeds. Both of my largest fish on Rainy have come from weedy areas. And yes they were very big.
