Hi guys, new to this board love the info here,
I have a question here that we in the Georgian Bay area of Ontario are pondering, Is it a waste of time and money using the Florocarbon Leaders
We currently run 50lb and 80lb Power Pro with the the matched florocarbon leaders 5-6 feet long, but on a cast the knots can not be good for the rod guides, we started using this setup last year and have not lost any fish because of it and in the clear waters around here we thought that this might give us a better chance with the fish,we do this with Bass
setups as well. I am talking the Braided to the Florocarbon tied to a 120 lb Spro swivel- no steel leader used,
Am I wasting my time with this setup? should I be going Braided to a steel leader to the bait, better feel etc and easier on the rods..
Steve Worrall your thoughts on this one if you have time please.

I'm no pro but have been experimenting with Flourocarbon all season. All I've used is 80# Climax and the stuff is just amazing. My longest leaders are about 30", most are about 12-14", so I never reel the knots into the rod guides. I spend most of my time "fishing the jungle", in very heavy timber and so far have not experienced a single nick or kink, even when the fish wrap around a tree trunk. I still use single strand wire for certain applications, like Undertakers and Jackpost, but Flouro has totally replaced the Sevenstrand braid I used in the past.

I'm going to try light Flouro for tip up leaders on pike rigs this winter.

princecraft, I use 50# flouro with spro's and have not had a failure in two years(well over 100 fish). I also use 50 and 80# Power Pro line and some copolomar line for trolling. One thing to remember is when you are using the lighter lines, be sure to go easer on the fish if it is a big girl. My setups are on the lighter side for my trolling applications but still use the same leaders. Lighter setups will increase your nunbers but you must be carefull when you get a monster fish on. That area holds some true monsters. Extra sharp hooks are a must !!! I would and do use them for all my fishing. Good luck-stick a pig.

Thanks for the info guys, that is what I thought all year, I'll shorten the leaders up and fish away. Hopefully no knot failures and the Bimini Knots have not let go yet all season, with a dab of le-pages superglue on the leader knot because of the hardness of the florocarbon.

Thanks Mike for the info , it is helpful to talk to a Pro on this issue and others . There are no other websites like this one on the net that I have found yet where you can actually talk to the Pro Guides themselves.

One other tip is to make your leaders and stretch them out on a board. Add a drop of superglue to the knots and leave them for a few days. The leaders will come out straight and ready for action.

I have a question for all of you florocarbon users. What is it that makes the floro better than steel? In my years of Muskie fishing I have had 3, 7 strand steel leaders bitten in two, 1 .030 solid steel leader either bitten off or kinked when a fish was on and broken, I don't know for sure. I still have a lot of trouble believing that I will not have problems with either floro or hard mono. Maybe my perspective on this is skewed a bit because I jig so much. This lets the fish get a pretty good hold of the bait and the leader at times. I know that regular mono doesn't stand a chance so I was just questioning the reasoning of anything but steel. Please don't tell me it is because the fish can't see it. They can certainly see the hooks on your baits and they don't know what they are so I know that they don't know what line or leaders are. Could be I am way off base and am missing out here and I would like a few more bites.

Randy - search the threads, we described flouro knots in detail a couple times. Can't find, send me an e-mail.

Howdy Mike - I've found the flouros to be much more durable than sevenstrand. I use to go through a couple dozen sevenstrands each season. Like at least one each trip in the timbered waters I usually fish. And I hate the down time of replacing a kinked leader. Not so with flouro, they last and last. I have one leader on my bucktail rod that's boated 6-8 fish in the past few weeks, plus LOTS of bass (like maybe 30, no kidding), including some 3-4 pounders. They may have an advantage in very clear water, too, but I don't think they are invisible. Since I make my own, and sell a few on the side, I get them for, well, free. How's about I send you one to try out?

Ranger, yes I would like to try one. Don't know if I will ever trust them but I would like to see if I get an extra bite or two.
If you do not allready have my ship to Addy, E mail me and I will send it back. By the way, send a few and I will send you back some jigs or something.
