Greetings all. Our annual fishing trip this year might have us going to northern Wisconsin so I'm interested to hear about lakes (<5,000 acres preferred) that are good for both muskie and smallmouth bass. A location four hours or so from the Twin Cities would be ideal.

Our timeframe is early August and our group (4-6 guys) is not hardcore, but rather looking for something relaxing, relatively remote/quiet, and has good fishing.

Any lodges and/or VRBO recommendations welcomed, too.

Thanks in advance.

Teal and Lost Land fit your requirements, and you can always do a day trip over to Round for some world class smallie fishing.

Turtle flambeau flowage has what you seek. It fishes smaller than it's size. I know its in minnesota but lake vermillion fits this too.

This. Ive never been, but have heard nothing but good things about the smallie fishing up there. Buddies that are bass whackers love it.

TFF is an enjoyable experience but these last few years for unbeknownst reasons the quality and size structure of its smallmouth fishery has gone a bit downhill, while fishing pressure and weekend traffic significantly up. It's still decent enough but hard to ever find many SMB surpassing 17-18" outside of spring. They grow fast, and have a short lifetime. Numbers-wise and action still very good though.

Keep in mind you could be coming on the hottest temp-wise month of the entire year and if TFF is an option, know that most lowland flowages warm quickest and retain heat more often due to shallow depths and dark water...... then you could potentially be fishing warm bath water especially if it's a hot one like 2016 was. I had a couple of bass outings out there in mid August in which I dealt with 78-80 degree water. Brutal, would not want to do that again. Can't speak for muskies though. If considering TFF, I'd also look into the Gile Flowage located nearby - the bass fishery there is on the upswing.

The Hayward area mentioned above is a solid choice with Round/Grindstone included. Both fish very well in late summer but experience there limited. For August in my area of Vilas I'd suggest the Boulder JCT/ Manitowish area. Lots of diverse musky water, and tons and tons of bass options making lake hopping effective. If the weather's hot in August, you will find enough lakes that will still run cooler for SMB and Muskies keeping them still active, though you might be fishing for both deeper.

The Gile is cool. If you google vrbo gile flowage a cabin will pop up as being amish built. Its a great place to stay, the owners are amazing. Flip thru the pics the last pic is my step son with 1 of the 2 muskies he caught on a trip in 2015. We caught several nice small mouth on surface lures muskie fishing. Its not a numbers lake for muskie, just realize that. If you put in your time during peak fishing hours you'll have your chances tho. If you end up going that route PM I'll shoot you some specifics

The Turtle Flambeau Flowage offers what you are looking for. 19000 acres of which only 5% has been developed. Everything else is owned by the state and is a dedicated wildlife area. The smallmouth bite is good most anytime. Fish shoreline and rocks. Last year we had 141 muskies registered here at the resort from our guests and customers. Give us a call at Donner' s Bay Resort , we will be more than happy to answer any questions for you.
